Default Loud noise from laptop

I purchased a used laptop off Craigslist a couple months ago and haven't really been able to use it often until the last month or so, but recently maybe once or twice over the last two weeks, when I open up my laptop from sleep, there's a really loud noise that sounds like a fan but I can't be sure.

It goes away every time if I close the laptop again but should I worry?

Is there anything I can do considering this is a laptop?

Tried blowing it out?

More likely it's a drive waking up than a fan if it happens when you're waking up from sleep.

Is it an immediate blast of noise or does it build up for a second or so?

Is there a DVD in the drive when you're waking up from sleep?

If you want to see if it's a fan, download Prime95 and do a stress test on your CPU, it should heat up and kick the fan on.

Always good idea to open up used laptops and blow the hell out of it with compressed air as these guys love dust bunnies. It will make your fan work less harder too.

I'm pretty sure that is just the fan ramping up as they are programmed to blast out hot air when you turn on and off the system.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try some of the ideas here and see what I find. It does only happen when I turn the machine back on from sleep so I'm hopeful that's all it is.
