Although they are signed in a different context, seeing deals like this make me love the Hanifin contract even more.

Jeff Petry's new deal has trade protection. A no-movement clause with a 15-team trade list to be submitted.

Jeff Petry is significantly better than Noah Hanifin by every measurable statistic. Petry is really good, and he doesn't get anywhere near the recognition he deserves (although this contract gives him the recognition).

I like the Brodie comparable on Term.
If you could do 4 years $5.5M for Brodie I might be okay with it.

Noah had a pretty bad season last year, but if you take that one out they're very comparable. Not to mention that comparing them at the same age, Hanifin is vastly superior.
Petry is now 32 and this contract will take him to 36-37. Looks pretty bad.

He was better. If these were one year deals it would be a different story. In two years I would take 25 year old Hanifin for 1.5 mil less over 34 year old Petry. All contracts are gambling on the future, especially if you are not a win now team, like the Habs.

Flames inked Mark Giordano to a 6 year extension in the summer of 2015 worth $6.75M per at almost the same age. Gio was coming off 48 points in 61 games, Petry is coming off 40 points in 71 games.
This deal isn't out of line. It's a fair deal.
Hanifin to date hasn't shown the offensive ability to be in this ballpark, and I'm not sure Hanifin's age is any sort of guarantee he will begin producing/impacting games to this level. Hanifin's deal is not bad, but to say that this Petry contract makes the Hanifin deal look better is just misguided in my eyes.

$6.25M for Jeff Petry.
Who was lining up to give Jeff Petry $6.25M when Alex Pietrangelo is a UFA.

Canadiens have the space, and the term is alright. Yes he is 32, and he might see a fall/drop in play, but 4 years is not too long a term.
He has had a solid few years in Montreal.

Huh? His last three season point totals are 32, 33, and 17. He has definitely shown he has that sort of offensive ability, and at a much younger age than Petry ever showed it. Last season was not a good one for Hanifin.
And re: Gio, he was the team's captain, had just led us on a surprise playoff burst, and was coming off of two almost 50 point seasons (48, 47). He was pretty much the best player on our roster at the time. I don't really think he and Petry are comparable, when Petry benefits from Weber sheltering.

I like this deal. Petry has been a solid guy on the blue line since they stole him from Edmonton.

Petro is making this money for posting 42, 46, and 40 points in three straight years. Hanfin's career year of 33 is 25'ish % less than what Petry has now done consistently. That's not insignificant. I'm not arguing against Hanifin in any way - I'm just arguing against this Petry deal somehow making the Hanifin deal better. I don't think it does in any way.

But your comparable of Gio was producing at roughly a 25% higher pace prior to his contract signing.

Giordano got paid more and got long-term at that higher dollar figure - the difference in production equals the difference in contracts - Gio also signed for more cap % than Petry did.
It doesn't make the Giordano contract better, nor does it make the Petry deal better.

Doesn’t Quebec have one of the highest tax rates in the league?

It’s tough because Jeff Petry is exactly the player that they need. If only they could get a player like Petry in Edmonton...
