If I’m a Canuck fan, I would be rejoicing, no bonus or additional cap hit.

Who cares about these awards?

Not surprisingly one of them is Jim Matheson.

Surprisingly one is Flames writer Darren Haynes.

The last one appears is Swedish broadcaster Jonatan Lindquist

At least Haynes gave him a 5th place vote. Matheson had him 3rd, ahead of Fox.

The only statistical category that Bear was ahead of Fox in was ice time per game.

I guess he also wins for scarier namesake animal.

Heiskanen

I'd flip Hughes and Makar, but yeah. I got roasted at the start of the year for saying Makar wasn't even the best D man in his draft. Glad everyone is coming around to see that.

The one thing to remember, and it does matter at their age is that Hughes is a year younger.

Also, he played for a gawd-awful hockey team. That's got to count for something.

Hughes is 3 months younger than Heiskanen. So yeah, you got that going for you.

I mean, developmentally it's still a year due to age cut offs, no?

No, probably not, from a physiological and psychological standpoint. One was born in late July....your guy was born 3 months later. The age cutoffs for the draft are not a difference maker re: development, especially considering where they played before draft.

They lost to the same team you did, but okay, I guess.

Shows how much I know. I thought the draft cut off was in line with the age cut off that was played through growing up.

Just watch them play. One is a legitimate star and plays a complete game. One might be a star. 3 months doesn’t change that.

No pun intended re:star.

To be fair, one extra season in the NHL and two pro seasons outside of the NHL probably work in Heiskanen’s favour. Hughes is at least a year behind in development no matter how you split it.

It’ll be more interesting to see who the better player is between Heiskanen, Makar, and Hughes in 5 years than it is today.

We should've known it'd go to the Calgary kid.

You’re right.

I have not seen a D like Heiskanen in a long long time. Probably overstating the case.

Certainly not trying to argue that fact.

The only surprising part is there are hockey writers are dumb enough to give Hughes third place votes.

I can see it. If they had Kubalik or Fox in the top 2, that would push him to third. Throw in a couple homer 2nd place vote for the goalies in NJD and CBJ and there are your 6 3rd place votes. There are more surprising 3rd place votes on that list that make you scratch your head.

Yes, and the argument is that Hughes and Makar should have been 1 & 2 on everyone's ballot. These are supposed to be professional hockey writers. It doesn't take an expert to see these two guys were lightyears better than the field.
