I'm surprised a team hasn't tried an offersheet with a poison pill like Flames did for O'Reilly. With how they need to be careful with the space they have for all their young players, they may not have the appetite to match. If they do it just opens up the same issue for the other players.

Nylander still has to sign the offersheet. I don't see a team willing to give up 4 first round picks for him. A team would need to give up 4 firsts if he signed either for 8 years at 6.3M+ or 7 years at 7.2M+. So for 8 or 7 years the team would need to get him to sign for less than that. But anything less than 7.2M and the Leafs are matching.

So now you're pretty much left with:

7.5M-8M at 6 years, and giving up two 1sts, a 2nd and a 3rd.

or

7.5M-8M at 5 years, and giving up a 1st, a 2nd and a 3rd.

Both of which bring him to UFA. Neither are super enticing.

7.5Mx5 seems reasonable if your Vegas GM imo.

You do 2 years. 3.5M and 7.5M for 5.5 AAV. Compensation is 1st and 3rd. You can bring that AAV up to 6 and still have it at 1st and a 3rd. He now needs to be qualified at 7.5.

Teams are probably reluctant to make an enemy out of the largest franchise in the game, or any franchise really.

A poison pill offer sheet would absolutely do that and you probably don’t end up with the player at the end of the day.

The leafs probably match, trade the player after a year, then look to screw over whoever sent the offer sheet in any way possible LONG TERM in order to send a message to the league.

The team who sends the offer ends up with nothing except a powerful enemy

McKenzie on NBC reporting that the Preds and Rinne have begun preliminary talks on a contract extension and it might even end up being a long term deal.

Will be interesting to see how this might play out with Saros.

Why would you sign a +35 goalie any longer than 2 years?

I know he's one of the best but it seems dangerous.

Especially with Saros on the force. They will regret that.

If that's the case, do what it takes to get saros. He's going to be real good

Well, first of all that's not a valid contract.

And if it was, that's easily matched by Toronto, if only to trade him at the end of the contract. And why would Nylander sign it?

O'Reilly was a special case because of the lockout and bonus structure meant he was paid nearly the entirety of his "two year" contract despite playing only a year and a half making it much more lucrative. And more importantly it brought him to within two years of UFA and arbitration eligible. There was a lot of poison there, and it was still signed.

As for a valid 5.5 AAV, it would need to be 3.66666M and 7.333333M. Toronto then could take Nylander to arbitration for 85% of 7.33M or roughly 6.2M...assuming he wasn't worth more than that anyways, and without fear of UFA.

Insider trading:
https://www.tsn.ca/video/insider-tra...r-deal~1517594

despite Dubas going to Switzerland to meet Nylander, lots of work still to be done.
No numbers were exchanged at the meeting

Hockey ops on NHL team tour.
Parros warning players about knee pushes (e.g. Spurgeon on Palat)

Tolvanen decision looming.
Has a clause in his contract that if he plays 10 games in the AHL he can go back to Europe.
Preds hoping he will stay in NA.
If Tolvanen goes back to the KHL, he can't return again this season

Brayden Point's agent and Lightning met this week and agreed to shelve contract talks till after the season
Tampa will need to do some cap gymnastics to fit him in

NHLPA has filed a grievance against the Lightning for terminating Dotchin's contract.
First they want to get the difference in salary
second they don't want a precedent set that a NHL team can terminate a contract for a player showing up out of shape

NHL is 100% open towards having female on-ice officials
Inviting college/national team players to attend their officiating combine

Tatar 3G 5A +6

Paciorety 1G 0A -3

The most lopsided deal of the summer so far.

Everyone expected the usual suspects from Ottawa, Montreal, and Vancouver (guys like duchene, edler, Stone, etc.) to be trade deadline fodder this season but I haven’t heard of anyone that might be available from the Red Wings who, right now, are the best bet to be sellers at the deadline this year.

Can’t think of anyone they have that would make a good piece on any kind of contract that works... at least none that Detroit would probably trade.

I kinda feel bad for Jeff Blashill. He's a good coach, but hasn't really had a team that can live up to Detroit's expectations.

He might be looking for work before the end of the season.

Jack Hughes? They seem to be on track.
