He has 2 years left on an affordable contract with historically much higher production.
I don't see the value in selling low on him.
|
The only reasons to ship him out at any point would be to:
1. Improve the team
2. Worsen the team for a tank, thus improving our own draft position
#2 is still on the table from a speculative perspective, but I think we all know this organization doesn’t tank (because they like being a bubble team by design), so then it’s into #1 and yeah - we’d be selling low in a “hockey trade” situation, so it’s not a good time.
Hopefully his hip surgery sees him recover his past offensive glory and suddenly makes him a capable defensive centre.

Anyone questioning Sean Monahan's commitment to this team or the game can officially STFU. The results, okay, but this injury clearly impacts the results and explains a lot. Hoping for a quick recovery and return to form.

Yup. Mony is a tough cat. You look at the NBA; players load manage and get babied if they even just get a small bruise.

Monahan doesn't inflict any punishment, but he absorbs a lot. I never question his toughness.
This isn't really great news. It makes him extremely difficult to trade. And he had a poor year last year and he was disappointing from game 1 this season. So it's really impossible to predict with any confidence whether his game will return or if he will get injured again.
So we are left with a $6.3 million question mark going into next year. At least compared to his play this year, there is upside.

I think generally any time people start questioning commitment to the team/winning, they’re talking out of their ass. I don’t question the “heart” of anyone on this team.
Just because they do care, doesn’t mean they can play with emotion and ratchet things up at important times. I don’t think I have ever seen a Calgary Flame “not care”…outside of maybe Chris Drury.
Monahan playing through injury is also nothing new. His commitment level should never have been questioned.

Should have shut him down earlier and let Bennett slot it. It's been obvious that he hasn't been 100% for a while.

A lot of crapping on Monahan and his injuries, but the same people want to trade for Jack Eichel and his injury history, including a spinal injury?

Saying he gets injured every single year isn't questioning his commitment to the team. Who are you even referring to?

Ah - no surprise there. He's looked slow for a while. Too bad. Hope he has a full recovery.

Safe to say Monahan won't be moved this offseason as it would be selling extremely low. Hopefully he can get fully healthy and have a bounce back season as it was pretty tough to watch him this season. Nobody will never be able to question his toughness as he plays out every season despite being injured. However it's been a big problem for this organization that their top center (was until this season) is never at his best at the end of seasons when the games matter more.

They're targeting a normal kick-off for the 21/22 season - sometime around October 12th from what I can find.

Unless he has been injured for literally his entire time as a Flame he’s still a lazy player
Never watched a game and thought “wow Monahan left it all out there tonight”
He’s 6’3 215 and has played over 600 games for us without throwing a single big hit. He’s consistently been one of the worst defensive players in the entire league. He’s a lazy one dimensional player even when healthy and teams have figured out how to mostly shut him down.
So is he as bad as he showed this year? No but you still need to move him
