Truly one of my favorite bands. I've seen them in big out door concerts, Road Side Attraction, to small little pubs in and around d Toronto and Calgary.

I still remember a young G watching the New Orleans is Sinking video on Much Music and my dad being upset over the but flicking matches at the gasoline can. Such a great catalog of music over the decades.

Kicking myself for all the times I have said "I will see them the next time they come to town". Assuming they play here on this tour, I imagine tickets will be so hard to come by.

I'm on their emailing list. I woke up and grabbed my phone and started looking, and "Oh, look! More news from The Hip!". Crap, what a kick in the gut.

I'm not so huge into The Hip now like I was 20 years ago, but they're still my favorite band of all time, and my goto music when I can't decide what to listen to.

My favorite concert was An Evening With The Tragically Hip. No opening acts, just The Tragically Hip. I think the show lasted for nearly 4 hours, with a 30 minute intermission. It was great.

this is the e-mail from the band, if anyone wants to see it (nothing new):

Hello friends.

We have some very tough news to share with you today, and we wish it wasn't so.

A few months ago, in December, Gord Downie was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

Since then, obviously, he's endured a lot of difficult times, and he has been fighting hard. In privacy along with his family, and through all of this, we've been standing by him.

So after 30-some years together as The Tragically Hip, thousands of shows, and hundreds of tours...

We've decided to do another one.

This feels like the right thing to do now, for Gord, and for all of us.

What we in The Hip receive, each time we play together, is a connection; with each other; with music and it's magic; and during the shows, a special connection with all of you, our incredible fans.

So, we're going to dig deep, and try to make this our best tour yet.

We hope you can come out and join us this summer - details and dates will be coming this week.

And we sincerely thank all of you, for your continued love and support,

Paul, GordD, Johnny, Rob, GordS

Poorly kept secret. Been hearing rumors about this through friends at sunnybrook for a while. Was hoping this was julius level BS, but I guess not.

Still amazed by Gord D's stage presence. The incredible energy he displaced in their more recent shows was no less than the crazy young band that played the all-ages Ballroom shows in the early 90s. Just powerful. And so iconic.

Hoping for a very high quality of life in his final stretch. #### cancer.

Well, I would guess that will be a hot ticket this summer if it happens. One of the greatest in Canada, ever. I hope he celebrates his life with fun and entertainment until the very last day. Seems like what he would do.

The Hip were the first rock band that I got into as a kid emerging from traditional children stuff. My brother is big into music and is 9 years older than me, so I raided the hell out of his cassette collection to make a mix tape.

To this day I have a hard time getting into music that's lyrically too simplistic, and it's probably Gord's fault.

I am curious as to what form of brain tumor he has and whether he has explored any novel treatments that are still in clinical trials.

It's going to be happening more and more often. For the Gen-X generation, their heroes are getting close to their 60s+ and a lot of health issues can start appearing. This culture of musicians and popular music and stardom only really started in the last half of the 20th century. For the 1960s generation, they went through this as well. Remember George Harrison passed away at 58 about 10 years ago. Now that 1970s/1980s generation is moving into that phase.

Very few people have written better songs than Gord Downie, very few people have sung such songs as well, very few people can command a room, as a performer, like he can, very few people have utilized their own success to support lesser known artists and people in need as well as he has, and very few people in a position such as his have been as kind and forthcoming to me personally. If I'm honest, his songs and melodies are always in my head. He's an absolute hero and I wish him, his family, and close friends all the best during this devastatingly sad time. I can't believe it.

I remember the first time I heard this song in 1987:

Spoiler!

I was hooked. The Hip have been the sound track to my life. I may have strayed to other bands, and other music, but I always came back to The Hip.

There is no band who's songs I can hear, and suddenly I am transported back to an event, be is happy, sad or terrifying.

As Downie says "It a sad thing bourbons all around".

I will have to see this band off, I remember seeing them at the Westward club all those years ago.

The specialist treating Downie, neuro-oncologist Dr. James Perry, will hold a news conference in Toronto on Tuesday morning to discuss the singer's condition, details of which have not been released.

Downie has been diagnosed with glioblastoma, which is the most common and most aggressive cancerous primary brain tumour.

It affects about two to three people per 100,000 in Canada, the United States and Europe, according to information supplied by Sunnybrook Heath Sciences Centre, which is treating the musician.

Oh man what horrible news to wake up to. One of the perks of living in southern California, is being able to see the Hip at the Troubadour and Wiltern theaters. Such an amazing performer, he just mesmerized you the moment he hit the stage

Just last night I was listening to Phantom Power and went in to Music @ Work then In Violet Light... Thinking to myself, hot damn these guys have such staying power with me. I was singing tunes that I hadn't listened to in years. Knowing they had a new album, I knew we were going to be getting a summer tour, so I was pretty excited. Definitely not been a good morning.

This is very tough news to digest this morning. We all have a time and place for the inevitable, sadly for Gord that time is on the horizon. Ive been a loyal fan for many many years- I think Ive seen about 14 shows and every time they stroll to the stage it is like having a beer with an old friend.

I was part of the generation that crowned them the Kings of Canadiana and their presence on the Canadian scene will always be iconic. We have not lost our band/friends/icons yet. So perhaps today we should all reach for the catalogue of songs that have told the stories of our youth and let them fill the air once again. I am sadden by the news but I choose to look toward the summer with a teenage giddiness of seeing the band once more time.

I will be there - for Gord.
