Kovalchuk on waivers for contract termination
Is this the end of him in the NHL? or will he back with a low salary deal with another team
Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Ilya Kovalchuk was expected to leave the Kings as early as today, which would put him in breach of contract, which would bring on a suspension and off we go with the process which would end with an official parting of the ways this week. He would be UFA by the end of it.
Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
The Kings remain with his $6.25-M cap hit this season and next, because he's a 35-and-over player. But they would no longer have to pay him in real life. Kovalchuk's remaining $2.65-M bonus was paid over the weekend. He has $4.25 M in salary next yr but will walk away from that
News UpdatePierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
The expectation is that Kovalchuk will be on unconditional
luke fox @lukefoxjukebox
L.A. Kings statement: "Ilya Kovalchuk has left the team and been placed on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract with the club."waivers today (for purpose of contract termination)

Definition of wasted talent. He could've been one of the all time greats but clearly plays for the name on the back of the jersey and not the logo on the front.
Go back to Russia and stay there.

What a disaster this is for LA.
That’s a shame.

If the Kings terminate Kovalchuk's contract, they will have over $10 million in dead cap space from Phaneuf's buyout and Kovalchuk's contract next season.

Wow. That is a massive amount of dead space. Cap Managerment is huge in the NHL nowadays. I suppose they are rebuilding anyways, but still $10 million...

A ton of wasted space, but given the Kings are just at the outset of a rebuild, they likely don't give a crap. Saving the real money is going to be more important at this point.

Leaving immediately after his bonus was paid out... what a slimy and selfish player. Clearly don’t care about his legend in the NHL. Too bad.

If his intention is to play back in Russia, he could likely get a similar paying contract with a contender.

He has made a crap ton of money. he likely could care less about that 4M as he can go back to the KHL and make that and then some. They were talking about this on the morning show. If rumours are true with his KHL money, he has made over 150M.

They always will have those Stanley Cup victories but my goodness that team has been managed horribly since. Expensive mistake after expensive mistake.

Watch the league apply a "mulligan" to salary issues.
Call it the LA Do-over rule.....the Bruce Mcnall get out of jail free salary rule.

Odd comment to make about a 36 year old with 900 games and 400 goals in the NHL.
He's no Selke winner for sure, but had a good career.
Came close to winning with NJ in 2012 before Darryl's Kings rolled over them for their first Cup win.

After escrow/taxes/agent he's probably walking away from about 2 million. Lifechanging money for some, a few months interest for him. He'll make more in the KHL if he wants to keep playing.

It is easy in hindsight to say that this was a terrible decision for LA, but I recall thinking that this was a terrible signing at the time as well. Upside was never worth the risk.

Seems to me he is walking away from a lot of money to get an opportunity to play somewhere?
I think his previous move to Russia was just as much creative cap circumvention from Lou Lamoriello as it was Kovalchuk's doing.
He spent most of his career on a dumpster fire in Atlanta with no realistic chance of winning. As we are bearing witness to up north, even the best player in the league can't drag a dumpster fire to success in the NHL.

Yes, how dare an employee look out for their own financial situation rather then how they are perceived by outsiders.
