Most modern gas fireplaces will run without power, and often have a battery box for ignition. Just pull the front cover off and look underneath, in the event of a power outage, just install batteries and flip the switch as you normally would, and you have heat! Definitely any house in the affected area of this outage would have this ability. Just don't leave the batteries in there, I just leave a pair of D cells loose under there.
