Seems like a lot of middle ground between Twitter and WeChat.

There are a few key differences though. Something like 75-80% of Chinese internet users actively use WeChat already, whereas Twitter's user base is much smaller.

And it's more useful in China, where credit and debit cards are less common than in a lot of other places, and where other mobile payment options Apple Pay and Google Pay either don't work or have had little adoption.

So WeChat took a platform that basically everyone uses already and solved a problem (making non-cash payments easier). Adding payment options into Twitter isn't really going to do that (at least in North America or Europe). Unless they absolutely knock it out of the park and implement it in a way that's far better than existing options, to the point where people will sign up for Twitter just to use it.

If they made it frictionless to use maybe they just getting their existing users using it is worth while? Increasing revenues from the existing users is probably a big goal.

It needs to be valuable from both sides though. As a business why implement accepting twitter payments when you could implement apple or google pay? That would cover people using twitter and many more.

I thought they were already doing micro payments in the US?

But yeah, would be a good idea.

We have pretty frictionless payments here already. Tap your card, your phone or watch. I'm not sure what Twitter could do to make it any easier. Online, you could add a button to check out websites via twitter like they already have for Paypal, Google Pay or Apple Pay or any of the 8 billion start ups working on this.

Its possible to see Twitter finding a path in there somewhere but doesn't strike me as easy solution.

Maybe solvable by being certain of the twitter handle… at least until you have deepfakes going, “this is my official twitter handle..”

Oh, I don't read much into it. Him having a platform on which he can't be censored no matter what crazy stuff he may choose to say is probably part of what he bought it for though. It's his horn now, and he can blow it any time he wants and however he wants, and he will. It's kind of reminiscent of Trump in how he's just stirring up attention with it to capture an audience.

They haven't actually made the subscription for the check available though yet, have they? I assume this is just one of the many cases where someone has bought a verified account and then changed the username, which is an old and well-established problem of Twitter pre-Musk.

I doubt it. I'm not sure why a fake Connor McDavid account would have been verified. You can change the name but not your twitter handle, right?

You can change your handle. You're just limited in how frequently you can change it. So, people will sell verified accounts that have a blue check, and then the buyer will just change the handle and wipe out the history of tweets, allowing them to appear as if they're really verified.

Can we be sure that’s even the real Frank Serevelli complaining? Maybe they’re both fake accounts.

Yeah, it's available now. I've seen a bunch of new "verified" accounts from guys who wouldn't need to be verified. I have the option of purchasing too in my settings.

Rapid dissemination of news in real time used by journalists to reach their audience. Journalists are covering the twitter story ergo ad this disproportionately affects how they will do their job and drive traffic/revenue you get a lot of reporting on it.
