They don't really, Facebook wasnt radically different from myspace, it was slightly better, that's all the new twitter needs to be, slightly better, where Musk is going to kill twitter is he is making it easier for the next thing to be 'slightly better' because he is making twitter a fair chunk worse.

They are free so people will open up accounts without a second thought, it is incredibly Darwinian really, a slight improvement on Twitter and users will start to favour that site

Not to sidetrack and focus on the specifics of the example, but one thing that really got Facebook going initially was its exclusivity. People without college emails in those first couple years were totally screwed. Facebook just really had the cool factor compared to the plebs using myspace.

Overall I agree with your post, it just gave me some nostalgia for that era.

Looks like the marketplace of ideas is just as flawed, corrupt, and easily manipulated as every other market.

Twitter is secretly boosting the accounts of 35 VIP users over others, per a new report from Platformer.

Zoë Schiffer, Platformer's managing editor, cited internal documents from Twitter that listed 35 VIP users who have their posts monitored and promoted for greater visibility.

Schiffer published 14 of the 35 names on the list, which included Lebron James, the NBA star; Mr. Beast, a prominent YouTuber; Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the US politician; Ben Shapiro, the conservative commentator; and Twitter's own CEO, Elon Musk.

The list also included the pro-Trump commentator, catturd2, with whom Elon Musk has had many Twitter conversations.

That list should come as no surprise to anyone using the platform, as I observed myself a few days ago.

Hey! I've barely even heard of Mastodon, do they have a farmer?

I have unfortunately, heard of furries. That was a pretty grim episode of CSI.

I have done nothing to warrant this level of abusive treatment!

Elon has taken away the New York Times verified check mark, and only them so far, I believe.

He's such a baby.

Remember DogeCoin and the world of crypto when you use the Birdie app. Elron insists on it.

He is either being stubborn and unwilling to admit his Twitter Blue subscription idea is not going to be a significant source of income in the short term or he's too dumb to realize it won't be a significant source of income.

The only people who care about the blue checkmark are people who don't have it. And the only people who pay for it are basically self sorting themselves into attention seeking people you don't want to follow.

Almost half of the "following" tab is accounts I do not follow. The "For You" tab is just a bunch of hot take traps from nonsense accounts. Yuck

I find Musk to be a truly repulsive human, but it is fascinating how devoted people are to him. Replacing a tiny bird with a tiny dog and people respond.

Doge I suspect is the ultimate meme crypto so Elon can do something like this - give it big boost - cash out and then every lols about it afterward. Meanwhile the people who get screwed over in the pump and dump can't complain about it because it makes them look like they don't get the joke. Losing the rep online is a bigger loss to these people than losing money.

Yeah ... the stuff being pushed on me in "following" is relevant but I still don't want it for many reasons. I follow a lot of great science, space feeds and I'm legitimately afraid to lose visibility into them.... but this could be the last straw.

Edit: yes, it was the last straw. What a cesspool.

You would be surprised how many Tesla fans think he's single handedly saving the world.

What looks like tweets you follow under your "following" tab are actually retweets from accounts you already follow. You just do not see the retweeted from until you click the tweet. Still really stupid. The whole thing is really stupid.
