Off topic, but Legends of the Fall was originally going to be filmed in Winnipeg, but the City refused to be flexible in allowing them to remove trees, even though they would have been replaced.
And the military extras in that movie were pulled from the Calgary Highlanders, the unit that perpetuates the Fighting 10th Battalion.

I don't know who approves all of these cutting edge styles, same as the new police training center, it's same kind of ugly angular designs, weird shaped roof that started leaking before the building was even used, one day I saw some geese on top of it playing, must have like the water.
I'm very much looking forward to the meltdowns that will ensue when Raisatl doesn't win either the Hart or Ted Lindsay award tomorrow. Kurt Leavins already said there should be an inquisition if Raisatl doesn't win at least one of them.
I can't see any rationale that says Raisatl was more valuable to his team then Mackinnon, nor do I think the players are gonna look at "defensive stalwart" Raisatl and say yep, he's the best player in the game.
Mackinnon wins both and Oilers fans have a meltdown.

I was listening to Hanifin on the Spittin' Chiclets podcast and the topic turned to guys getting free stuff when they play in a Canadian market.
Whitney told a story from his time in Edmonton when the Oilers gave Hall, RNH, and Eberle each a new Ford truck. The upholstery in each one was blue and orange with Oilers logos and the player's name all over the truck. They were able to drive the trucks for a year, then they were autographed and auctioned off.

Pretty sure it's from the individual dealership and not the Flames, but I know some of our players get vehicles as well.
I actually ended up buying Monahan's 4Runner after he had it about 6 months I think. Nice truck - all done up with a lift, tires, blacked out and everything. All I got was a signed jersey, the truck wasn't signed lol - that must be an Edmonton thing haha.
I only bought it as I get a lot of vehicles from the particular dealership and was in the market for one of those, not because I particularly cared who drove it.

100%. If the Flames gave out cars it would be cap circumvention. This is just dealers (and the like) having celebrities use their products as way of advertising. If it's good enough for Monahan, it's good enough for me!
But outside Canada, especially in less traditional hockey markets, the argument seems to be that it is probably less likely that a hockey player can capitalize on their local celebrity-status when they aren't really celebrities.

My wife's cousin played professional in Germany and Italy and he told me stories about the perks he would get even there. For example, he was also given a car to use the whole time he was in Germany. He also lived in an apartment and never had to pay rent. I am not sure what the deal was there. His restaurant tabs would often be taken care of as well.
