Michael Stone joins main group at morning skate in no contact jersey
Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
TJ Brodie is on the ice for morning skate today. He missed Monday’s win over Arizona with an undisclosed injury.
Michael Stone also out there in a yellow non-contact jersey. First time he’s been on the ice with his teammates since November. #Flames

Derek Wills @Fan960Wills
He’s wearing a no-contact jersey, but it’s so good to see Michael Stone skating with #Flames teammates for first time since November.

Absolutely. I´d rather have him re-join the lineup than acquire another mid or low-pairing vet for the playoffs. I´m fine with Valimaki and Kylington as depth on the left side.

Assuming this means the blood clot has dissolved, I'm very happy to see that he has recovered! It's so good to see him healthy.
Also, its good to know the Flames are close to adding him to the RHD part of the chart. I think he fits in 4th behind Brodie, Hamonic, and Andersson. So, he is excellent depth.

Does anyone know how far Valimaki is from returning?

He's skated for 9 games in Stockton.
It's possible that barring injury we do not see him up again, as unless I am mistaken that would burn an RFA year on team control due to us now being past the 40 game mark of the season.

With the blood clot issue, is it something that can be cured, or is this a chronic condition?

He's back. He has been in Stockton since January 25 and has played 9 games for the Heat.
Now, it's just a question of when/if he gets a call-up before the end of the season.

They'll probably call him up as part of the group of players after the deadline passes. He's been good so far with 6 points in his 9 games played in the AHL since returning.

I see no point in bringing up Valimaki up with how well Kylington is playing. Let him develop with top pairing minutes in the AHL unless there is an injury to a LD.

The year of RFA control has already been burned.
Unlike other conditions on a player's contract that are related to games played, the years of experience for UFA status are based on the number of games on a team's roster, regardless of games played (including games on IR).
Valimaki was on the roster for 51 games.

If Valimaki stays down this year will that exempt him from the Seattle expansion draft?

Indeed, having Stone back for the stretch run and playoffs would be like a depth deadline acquisition - we'd be 8 deep of NHL calibre defensemen. No need to bolster there - can focus on forward and/or goalie this week.

One would expect once Stone is game ready he would be sent down to Stockton for a conditioning stint, correct?
Realistically we are looking a ways out before we see Stone in the lineup again. I would expect depending on standings and what is on the line for the Flames, getting him in a bunch of games late in the season.

I think personally for stone it is a great sign that he is practicing with the group, but I think the fact he is still in a yellow jersey does not necessarily bode well for an impending return to the lineup. He might be practicing for awhile, both because of how long he has been off-in shape or not this is a 3 month layoff going into the stretch drive-and how well kylington is playing.
Sounds like he is out of the woods as far as the clot is concerned but there are obviously lingering concerns about how the treatments for the clotting impact his ability to withstand what might otherwise be minor contact.
I wonder how they make that determination, what's the risk threshold. Is the yellow jersey an over abundance of caution? I would think at the NhL level you are either ready or you aren't.
I don't think there is any stats on this but it seems to me that flames players aren't wearing the yellow jersey for more than a couple of practices before they are activated or they miss practice again and get shut down.
We'll see what this means in the next game or two I guess. Timing sure is convenient.

Talent wise. The depth of Valimaki, Stone and Prout is actually not the worst thing in the world.
I don't know if it is because his younger D partners are getting better, but lately when Prout has been in the lineup, I think he's been pretty good for what the expectations are.
The questions become:
Is Valimaki too far behind now that he would become a liability?
Is Stone actually going to come back this year, and if he does, will he be too far behind?
Are the Flames comfortable running with 3 Dmen 21 or younger in the starting lineup?
