Default Summer 2015 Prospect Ranking - Round 2

It's time.

Calgarypuck's 3rd annual Prospect Ranking Poll!

Going with the 25 and under with 65 or less games played at the NHL level which actually works pretty closely with my own rule of thumb of "anyone not too old that hasn't been penciled in".

Therefore Granlund, Ortio and Ferland are still prospects, with Jooris 5 games light of the 65 game limit.

Monahan and Gaudreau are young but clearly established and no longer prospects. Bennett may be penciled in but he's only played 12 NHL games and is a prospect.

Previous Two Editions
2014 - http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthr...highlight=poll
2013 - http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthr...ospect+Ranking

Rankings:

1. Sam Bennett - 96% (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=147961)

For me it's ferland, Poirer celing may be higher but Ferland has proven he will likely have a long impactful career in the NHL. Jury still out on Porier

I picked Poirier, but I see your point. As far as I am concerned, Ferland is almost a guarantee to being an NHLer if he can stay healthy. I think Poirier will be one and has a higher ceiling, but he has more to prove still.

It's the thing that I find most difficult about these types of polls. I always waver back and forth on ceiling vs. likelihood, and which I value more.

I'm hoping for the best for Ferland, but I'm class half-empty on him. I think his style of play, while effective, will be extremely tough on his body and have a short shelf-life. He's already had a few injuries, and if he keeps up his play like that, it's only a few years down the road where he'll have to adjust his style of play to keep going, and at that point, won't be as effective anymore.

I want him to do well, but no one can sustain that style for an entire playing career. I picked Gillies for this round. Poirier was a close second.

Ortio could be a regular in a key position at the start of the season. The only other guy I think you can say that about is Bennett (who is more likely to be an impact player.)

Man have times changed. I remember when it didn't get hard to pick a player in these polls until the 4-5th round. I'm kind of stumped and we are on the 2nd round. I could see a battle between 4 players. Ortio, Gillies , Poirier and Ferland. I'm going with Gillies , just because i think you build from the backend first.

I actually think ferland has a high ceiling as well with his hands. Top 6 winger modeling his game after iggys.

I think Ferland can be our Lucic so I went went him, but Poirier, Gillies, Ortio and Granlund would also be legit picks.

And I'd add Hickey to the list as well.

If the Flames had more normal development time you might see Monahan and Gaudreau still on the list too.

I'm voting for NHL ready players for these first few rounds, so Granlund gets my vote.

^part of the charm of this poll is how we all evaluate a little bit differently. Adds to the whole thing in my mind.

I'm a HF fan boy. Gillies is the one guy in the system the Flames have who could be a high impact player and core piece of a serious contender. So he gets my vote.

Ferland is pretty much a guarantee to be a NHL player, but I see him as really effective 7th forward. Similar with Poirier who could be a 4th best winger. Gillies to me has number elite one goalie potential.

Went with Gillies. I think he has the ability to special. I am really looking forward to see him in the AHL this year.

I find it amusing that I can still vote on the 2013 prospect rankings and that Jooris ranked so low on both.

Edit. Actually the link to the 2013 rankings thread seems broken here, I used the link from below quote.

Surprised to see Poirier with the early commanding lead.
I went with the guy we know (at least a bit better), Ortio.

Ferland was the best forward in a playoff series that the Flames won.... The first series won since 2004

Bennett was fantastic and played as well as could be expected for 18 year old and Ferland was better.

Was caught between Ferland, Poirier and Ortio. I think Ferland is NHL ready, Poirier has the highest ceiling of the forward group but I went with Ortio because even with a small sample size I think he, like Kipper, has a style that will solidify the entire Flames end of the ice for years to come.

We have only scratched the surface of what Emile Poirier is all about - his combination of speed, grit and finish could really open some eyes in the next year or two.
