17 career points, get's a $40 million dollar contract.
Didn't realize the Panthers thought that highly of him. Might not be a terrible contract though, who knows

Matheson is good and will continue to be good but he doesn't deserve that much.
8x4 would have been fair.

This will either be genius or geez what were they thinking. I think it'll be looked upon like the Brodie contract down the road, but it's a bit risky.

Matheson's underrated, but this contract pays him as if he isn't. Actually, it pays him as if he's already proved he'll live up to the expectations placed on him. Weird deal, both in dollars and term.

This is the "Josi" deal. Try to lock in a young guy at a rate that will look like a steal. Just Josi had shown more...

Of course he had, because Josi was, and is, far better. If this was a Josi deal, it'd have to be a poor man's josi deal, in which case he'd have signed for a 3.5 AAV, not 4.9. Or to put it another way, this would be closer to the Josi deal if Josi's cap hit was 6.5 mil per year.

This is more of the "Alzner" deal. Overvalue a "defensive" defenseman who lets his goalie gets shelled every night.
At least he's young and he could develop into a good player. But man this is an ugly contract based on what he's shown so far.

Matheson had an illustrious 3-year college career at Boston College, scoring 71 points in 112 games, as well as serving as the captain in his last year. He jumped into the AHL and proved to be already very good in that league, and then he earned a call up at the end of the year heading into the playoffs, where he looked right at home in the NHL. He earned a job out of camp last year, and by partway through the year had earned top 4 ice time. He's a good playmaker and can make some good offensive plays off the rush. He's still learning about the d-zone at the NHL level, but he was just as good as any Panthers defenseman in his own zone last year. He's also gone to the World Championships the last two years where he scored 13 points in 20 games.
If you haven't heard of Matheson yet you'll soon realize that he's going to be a mainstay in the NHL as a top 4 two-way defenseman for a long time. Ian McCoshen, also out of Boston College, graduated to the NHL as well this year and he looks to be trending the same way Matheson did, making Demers expendable. Hopefully Ekblad can get his game back on track, because those three are going to be part of the Panthers core defense for a very long time.
Matheson is 23, McCoshen is 22, Ekblad is 21.

Don't base anything off of last year. There was ZERO system to speak of under Rowe. You'll get a better sense of the type of player he is after this year under Boughner.

Who's a more popular defenseman around the NHL that you would liken his game to? He's a player that has always really intrigued me, but I don't watch him nearly enough.

Good question, but hard to answer because he hasn't fully fleshed out who he is at the NHL level. I don't know, a younger Nick Leddy?

When Gudbranson was traded, it was thought that Matheson had made him somewhat redundant, so that's not an unreasonable place to start.

Except he couldn't be further from the type of player Gudbranson is, which is what Love was asking about. He made Gudbranson expendable because he's a lot better than Gudbranson.
