Thanks

I have never fished for Grayling, I want to, how much different is it than fishing for trout?

Its not any different I would say. They have smaller mouths and so you use smaller flies, but they will take dries and are fun to catch.

They are beautiful little fish. In Southern Alberta they are stocked in a few places. Slava and I famously failed to catch one last summer, though they were rising. Then the summer camp arrived with boats and paddled right through our space.

That is a really pretty fish. Maybe i'll get into some in The Yukon if I make it up there this summer.
Going to be fishing this weekend and hoping that everyone will be busy with family suppers and such that it wont be busy.

Anyone ever fish from Little Bow Prov Park on, I guess its Travers Res. What can you catch in there and what do you use?

Almost exclusively Pike, I'd imagine. There may be the odd Lake Whitefish/Perch/Walleye. Spoons, jigs, rapalas, pike aren't really fussy. Smelts might be an option, check the regs.

Nice Tyee! A fairly exclusive club.

I find that Springs that big, aren't as good of eating as say a 20lb, but 30+lbs of line-ripping salmon, is going to be a pretty exciting day.

I try to get out to the west coast once a year to fish, typically some of my happiest times.

Yeah lots of slough sharks in Travers. Also walleye, perch... The usual southern Alberta fare.

Bring a big stick, the pike in Travers can be absolute monsters.

We have fished off the dock at little bow numerous times. Last year, we caught about 80 walleye in 1 afternoon from the dock between 3 of us, even with all the boat activity. There are also a few giant pike hanging out under the dock to steal your little walleye that you have hooked. We have seen a few that are well over 50cm, probably pushing closer to 100cm but have yet to catch one of those from the dock.

Only drawback there, you can't keep anything, all catch and release for walleye and pike this year. Have heard that some would go there and do some night fishing and take out a bunch of walleye. Bring your license, the CO's are always there and they give tickets pretty well every time I have been down there.

All you need is a weight down to the bottom with a dead minnow about 18" up. After dinner or early morning you can use big spoons or other large lures to do some spin casting, caught a few pike like that at the docks. Fun little place to fish but it is very busy.

Super cool bug hatch this past Saturday on a side channel of the Bow; i've never seen anything like it! The boatmen were swimming to the shore, molting or whatever they do to leave shucks and then flying away. As soon as the sun went behind a cloud they turned around and started swimming back into the water. Its not that I haven't seen hatches but the number of bugs was nuts. There were also a tonne of black and golden stones (stonefly nypmphs were working on rainbows and browns, 8 or so hookups between two of us this past weekend). What I found super odd was that 10 feet from where this crazy bug hatch was happening I had gotten into fish earlier on stonefly nymphs but there were no risers or fish activity in what would be considered an all you can eat buffet 10 feet the other way for the boatmen. I've heard of epic ant hatches on the Bow where it turns into a feeding frenzy but have yet to see be a part of a hatch where the fish are feeding. Pardon the video quality, between the two of us we have the skills of a 5 year old with the camera.

Looks like a solid midge hatch. In the lakes they are chironomids and can get a bunch bigger but in the rivers they are called midges. when they come off they offer some pretty good winter time dry fly fishing if you are in the right spot at the right time.

I am not much for in the city fishing but can I ask WTF is up with people driving through the river and parking on the gravel bar just off Glenmore by the bridge? It stirs up sediment from the bottom of the river which can damage fish habitat. People cant be that lazy its only 100 feet to the bank. This is not crown land and it is definitely not an approved creek crossing. I am actually shocked that ESRD has not brought the ticket book down there and punished ignorance.

Stirs up sediment? They aren't driving in the water they are driving on the gravel bank. They cross no water to park there. This exact location is used as a launch by the CFD, so is ESRD to fine the firefighters as well? The Bow has a lot bigger protection issues than a few people parking on some rocks.

Maybe go and take a look at the location before wasting the conservation officers time.

Does it actually cause damage if it is dry as Flacker mentioned?

We have driven out there thinking this wouldn't be an issue. I have seen a lot of people put their boats in the water down there and I don't think the ESRD would have an issue with it, as I would imagine they would be down there catching people doing this daily if they did.

Ok, so I asked some people at work, aquatics specialists about this driving on the dry river bed along the Bow and they don't think it is an issue unless people are kicking up the gravel/rocks and exposing the sediment below, which wouldn't otherwise happen naturally (unless flood or other such events).

Sounds like if people are just driving on the rocks/gravel then it won't affect the spawning areas for the fish in the Bow. But if people are tearing up the river bed and creating ruts, then there is an issue. And obviously other things such as oil leaks or other chemicals that can come from vehicles can get into the water.

I have been down by the Glenmore bridge numerous times and I don't see any ruts or people driving like maniacs down there. That is likely why the CO's aren't too concerned about it.
