In the 20 days since their last back-to-back the Flames have played seven games. Four on one-day's rest; one on two days', and two on three. All seven of these games have been on home ice.
In the second month of the season and under these circumstances there is virtually no good reason why any goalie should not be sufficiently rested, healthy and able to play all seven games.

How about 81? We already gave that slacker a night off in St. Louis.

Obviously not, but the fact he has started all but one of the Flames first 17 games has to do with how the early part of the schedule was structured, and nothing—I warrant—to do with expecting Smith to start +70 games. These were game management decisions plotted over a full season.

You start giving goalies nights off and the next thing you know those lazy bastards will want pensions, bigger equipment, a Union and a Dental Plan.
Its a slippery slope.

Did they recall another goalie then? I may have missed it in the other threads...my apologies if I did.

There is nothing on the AHL transaction list as of yet...so at this point the goalie fairy will just make one appear tomorrow.

Plus, they’ve already been pretty good about giving him “maintenance days” instead of practice every so often. He’s definitely capable of the load he’s faced, so far.

Is this a serious response? They had a 3 day break and top team in conference...starting goalie plays that game every single time

Boo. If they have to start Lack for more than one game this isn't going to be a good road trip.

Came in and done his job against St Louis on Monday

Taking a while to get to 5000

While I fully expect Mike Smith to be back in there on Saturday, on the off chance he isn't and Lack under performs tonight, then maybe we'll get to see whether Gillies or Rittich can take the ball and run.

Lack saved us the game, say thanks to Ferland and Hamilton for there boneheaded plays. Are you telling me that you would have been able to see a fluky-tipped shot and then save a 2 on 1 from a top 3 sniper in the league?

I wouldn't say he saved us. But he came in and was solid. Let's hope he is solid these next few games so he can gain confidence and trust. That would take a lot of pressure from Smith knowing we can put lack in
Certainly does seem like guys on this forum want him to fail for some reason

If Smith isn't back soon I expect that one of the young goalies will get some action, but I highly doubt that they will be given the ball to run with. Lack was signed to be the back up and will be given a lot longer leash than one or two struggling games.
To be clear I am not predicting that he will struggle. I think that we will be pleasantly surprised with lack. I think that he is a better goalie than he showed the last couple of years, and just needs some more game time. The guy was coming in cold after starting only 1 of the first 17 games and was just fine. If he gets a chance to find any groove at all, we can still win. Provided that the team plays well in front of him and doesn't put up one of our patented "back up goalie is in" performances.
With the way we have been rolling the last few games I still have a good feeling for this road trip.

Mike Smith did accompany Flames to Detroit...but will not play tonight vs DRW...won't even back-up...Jon Gillies recalled for the game.

I fully expect that some are eager to see Lack fail for precisely this reason. I don’t believe that the coaches are so shortsighted and reactionary that they will only give him a game or two. My prediction is that Lack will be fine.
