I haven't been following this closely, but it looks like a fairly large number of triathletes have been falling ill after going into the Seine in Paris. Looking online, it sounds like some believe the games/Paris officials are not wanting to admit how dirty the water is.

Quote:
Some Olympic triathletes who swam in the River Seine have fallen sick and were forced to pull out of competition this week amid concerns about the river’s water quality – a simmering issue plaguing Paris 2024 organizers.

Team Belgium withdrew from Monday’s mixed relay triathlon after one of its athletes, who competed in the women’s individual triathlon event last week, got ill.

Meanwhile, Switzerland had to revise its own mixed relay lineup not once but twice due to gastrointestinal infections affecting two of its athletes – one of whom had competed in the men’s individual triathlon event held in the Seine on July 31.

The Associated Press also reported that a female triathlete from Sweden and a men’s triathlete from Norway got sick after competing in their individual events in the Seine last week.

So with De Grasse's gold medal he officially becomes the most accomplished Canadian Olympian of all time.

2 gold, 3 silver, 3 bronze. Penny also has seven (1 gold, 3 silver, and 3 bronze). I would think Summer should break that record, but obviously nothing is a given when it comes to athletics.

Yeah, super happy for the men's relay team considering what a tough time they were all having in the individual events and this likely being all of their last Olympics games. What a way to end it!

Wow! No way! The Seine is filthy as all hell?? No!!! Who could have possibly known that??

#everyone

No idea what they were thinking there. The Seine is almost literally a sewer. If you wanted me to get in that water it'd have to be with a couple bullet-holes in my chest.

Breaking had to be the dumbest thing ever in an Olympics.

I know they have issues with boats but it’s always been weird to me that really fun summer and entertaining sports such as slalom waterskiing, tricks, wakeboarding and wake surfing are not allowed in the Olympics.

Anybody else watching the Closing Ceremonies on the Gem app have their feed freeze right as Tom Cruise was about to do his thing? I rewound it several times, always freezes at the exact moment right before they show him, and doesn't come back until he's on the ground high fiving everybody. Guess I won't be seeing that moment, so weird...did something go wrong with it that they don't want you to see?

That closing ceremony was just okay for me. I still think London's opening and closing were the best. Wasn't super impressed with the LA segment.

That was a very gratifying Olympics.

Perhaps some good can come of the "Drone-gate" scandal and some looking inward with the entire Canadian Soccer program.

Summer McIntosh was incredible. That 4x100 performance was truly legendary. Wow.

Daniel Whiffen who won Gold and Bronze for Ireland in the pool also entered the 10k open water race in the Seine.

He was meant to be one of Ireland’s flag bearers, but couldn’t do it because he fell ill.

I mean LA28 better basically bring back the Dr Dre Superbowl Halftime for the Opening Ceremonies, or I'll be disappointed.

Breaking was good - very athletic. What’s next though? Ballet, River Dance or Line Dancing?

I wonder if we're going to hear of any lawsuits or IOC payoffs for the athletes that swam in the Seine. They could end up with longterm health problems.

I can't believe they approved long distance swims in that river. Even after wasting 1.5 billion Euros on cleaning up the river, it made little difference. My wife lived in Paris for years and says she never saw anyone swim in the Seine... other than a body (that wasn't doing any swimming).

Absolutely bonehead choice. Surely there was an appropriate venue the organizers could have chosen?

This got me thinking about events for the “everyperson Olympics” or the “suburban Olympics”

Corner lot lawn mowing. Both speed and technical merit.
Building a table with nothing but a hacksaw
Speed vacuuming
Costco groceries - both speed and cost. Cheapest wins.
Car Tetris - fitting all the stuff from a family of 5 in the back of a mid sized SUV for a 10 day long camping trip. Bonus points if you can see out the back window.
he Rona Run - you must find an obscure part in a Rona without the aid from the one white haired guy who knows everything.

I wonder when Pickle Ball will be in the Olympics. More of a sport than some of these other activities.
