I want it to play La Cucaracha, like the Homer car.

It lightens the mood.

Ie. on shared pathways, it would be safer for pedestrians to walk on the left side. They don't have to be quite as aware of what's coming up behind them as that bike has it's own lane, and they can also see bikes coming their way and both can adjust if needed. It makes for a nicer experience for everyone as nobody has to be so paranoid.

Same thing with bikes riding on the road/highway. Both cars and bikes can better adjust when they both see each other and there are no surprises.
The highway idea goes to hell at the first crossroad/intersection.

The pathway idea doesn't work if opposing cyclists are going to pass in the vicinity of a walker. Both the walker and cyclist in that lane would have to fully stop until the other cyclist went by. Or imagine if things are even slightly busy...it would become a clusterfata pretty fast.

There is really nothing wrong with the status quo. Traffic happens and you have to go slower. It's not a lot of fun walking near hundreds of bicycles just like it isn't fun walking near hundreds of cars. We can design better.

And that doesn't have to mean twinning the entire reservoir. But there is plenty of more low hanging fruit. There is already a track running for another ~2km west from the South Glenmore tennis courts. There are lots of spots where the path could be wider.

What you really need though is volume. Too many people on pathways, be they Cyclists or Pedestrians with Noise-Cancelling headphones completely unfocused on anything except what is directly ahead of them.

Its the volume that really makes it.

The overall lack of development and progress in Calgary's East Village downtown. It's been over 10 years now and there hasn't been the growth that I anticipated or expected. It's kinda dead down there from a business perspective, even on weekends. This was suppose to be a happening downtown urban revival and it hasn't turned out like that.

I know the new arena and entertainment district is coming and all that, but how vibrant will that be on non event nights? Every time I have driven down, I see Calgary Parking giving tickets in the paid lots, even late at night. I totally understand paying for parking but the area is officially dead and there is ample space. Giving that developers, retail and residents are paying a property tax premium to be there, they should be building up a client base as opposed to worrying about hammering a suburban couple on a Wed night in February visiting friends in a condo or going for a meal.

Ykmrgmg? Endles yabber about something I don't care about. But I scroll through hoping sanity will prevail and then BOOM development in the EV. Yep. MGWG.

The problem is that you’re just driving around. There is a lot of stuff going on in East Village all the time, but you’re pretty insulated if you expect to see anything of interest from the confines of a vehicle.

I don't think it takes a lot of insight to figure out why the vibrancy of the east village is disappointing and may not be living up to expectations.

Too high of expectations?

It’s packed with people walking the dog, pushing strollers, kids playing on the park, etc every day and the restaurants/cafes etc have been busy every time I’ve been in them.

Curious what magical wonderland people were expecting. They turned one of Calgary’s worst central neighborhoods into one of its best, especially for people who don’t want or need a car.

Yeah I was gonna say...

We meet up there often with family and kids to walk around. Playground, good cafes, restaurants, ice cream, river walk...hits all the notes for a good family friendly hang out spot I'd say.

No strip club tho, was a huge disappointment.

Calgary's East Village when it was envisioned was a once in a generation opportunity to rebuild an area on prime real estate. Downtown, next to the water, transit, walkable, live, work, play, vibrant. Real estate with this much potential usually isn't available for complete redevelopment of an entire neighborhood in large Canadian cities. It was suppose to be Calgary's version of Yaletown in Vancouver and other hip, happening and vibrant areas in Toronto/Montreal etc.

Sure there is some vibrancy with people walking around and grabbing a coffee on a warm day etc, but is that really the end goal here? We have all been on vacation and been to cool cities with cool areas, the definition isn't strollers, babies, walking and coffee.

Where is the really cool shopping? Must try restaurants, bumping nightlife, unique independent businesses? All the great job opportunities and thriving start ups? There is a Superstore, Winners, Subway, Dominos Pizza. Lot's of chain places.

If any posters have friends/family coming into town, is that the place you take them out to show them the hottest area in Calgary? If you rented an Air B&B in that area as a tourist, is that really the area for the slogan "More City. More Life!" that they show everywhere. It is disappointing to me as Calgarian. I too frequent the area on car, foot and cycle but not as much as I would if there was some life there.

The lack of current development compared to other areas is very noticeable. I thought at first it was the lack of growth in Calgary post 2015 energy crash but even nearly 10 years later, there isn't an explosion considering the growth Calgary is experiencing.

Sorry, the guy who tried to argue that all of Calgary’s nice restaurants are overrated and Swiss Chalet was better is now complaining about how it isn’t the “hottest area” in the city? I would thing that Subway, Winners, and Dominos would be huge draws for a man of your taste and distinction lol.

They have CharBar, Phil & Sebastian, Sidewalk Citizen, Parlour, Chix, Soleil, Magpie, and the King Eddy. They have a bunch of historic buildings, as well as cool public art and buildings that function as both (Library, National Music Centre). They have the Confluence, great outdoor spaces, and some interesting recreation spaces (Bounce, Riverwalk). You should try to enjoy like… any of that… because if the first thing you think of (or that you looked up, since you named a bunch of stuff in one square block lol) is Winners, I’m not sure you’ve ever been there.

I know having some of Calgary’s best restaurants, museums/experiences, and outdoor spaces is underwhelming. But, they do have another 5-6 years of development left as part of their 20 year plan. Including 4-5 major projects in progress (apparently, a “lack” of development).

Maybe if you ask nicely someone will open up a Swiss Chalet there, and then you’ll have it all.

I have no idea where east village even is. I've heard of it, but always ignore whatever the fk it is or is supposed to be whenever central people start blabbing about it. Same way I hate anybody who talks about how great Village Ice Cream is. You're an immediate loser if you think an ice cream shop is any reason to go anywhere or do anything. The best ice cream in the world is pretty good. The most mid ice cream ever is just as good. People need to stfu about Village Ice Cream and East Village. They're one in the same to me and I don't even know if they are related.

Everything central sucks and is stupid.

I'd call it a flop, personally.

We just need to replicate Edmonton's Ice District.

Now THAT is a World Class city neighborhood.

A Swiss Chalet could very really open up there, much to my disappointment. I have mentioned before, I hate chains and hate corporate owned dining groups. Swiss Chalet at 4:30 for lunch being the exception.

As for the hottest and trendiest area in the worlds 5th most livable city, Calgary, I still say it's a disappointment thus far. Has the potential but I have seen this song and dance before with my families restaurant and lounge in Eau Claire Market in the 90's as a kid. Big promises but the Calgary nimbyism, lack of vibrancy, parking and other anti fun initiatives killed it. Other cities have downtown market/mall/bar/shopping districts that are fun but Calgary killed it, literally.

I could show you some fun times in Europe albeit not as fun as Calgary's East Village SoPi in Paris is off the charts and so is the 9th district. Agia Napa in Cyprus should be bumping right about now. Sardina in Italy knows the life morning, day and night in July. Recently hit up Ghent, Belgium. That had some real vibrancy in an unexpected way, enough so that if that was Calgary, the drug zombies running around East Village would literally be wiped out by the cyclists, the trams and the people walking to and from cool spots. Athens, Thessaloniki and the Greek Islands. Put them on your bucket list. There are a lot more places in Europe and North America for sure but too many to list.

I know the list of places you mentioned and there are some fine places there without a doubt, don't forget I am in the business. Places that I mentioned like Superstore, Winners and Dominos had ZERO business being there. Tim Horton's should have been legally prevented from opening a location there.

As for Calgary's hottest corporate resto/lounge group, Concorde, if memory serves me correctly and it may not, do they have a location in Calgary's trendiest area?

He’s in the industry! Travels around Europe! Loves Swiss Chalet.

You’re simultaneously the only person I’ve heard pitch it as Calgary’s hottest and trendiest neighborhood and the only person disappointed it isn’t that lol.
