Bears don't kill people, people with guns shooting at bears kill people.
Wait

Anyhoo, like this poster said, it is never my desire to kill a bear. Haven't had to do it yet, hope to never have to.
Just stating that I'd rather a have a shotgun pointed and aimed at an imminent threat to life and have the option to use it, than not have the option and become a victim.
If you've ever tried to use bear spray in windy conditions, or if the wind is going in the wrong direction, then you know what I'm talking about. I've done both, so I make the choice that I make.
Oh and cool guy meme poster, thanks, I am pretty impressive

If shotguns are unnecessary, one wonders why Fish and Wildlife officers deploy them when tracking bears. Weird.

Do you guys hike with bear bangers? I just have bear spray right now, but maybe I should get some bangers, too. They also seem kind of fun, so there's that.

Because they are trained, they do it in pairs, and they don’t hike with kids.

I like bear bangers for encounters when you see a bear (typically black bears) on a path at a distance, and you want to scare them off.
I sometimes carry it, and I've used them a few times in Northern Ontario. Works pretty well for scaring them off, 99% of the time.

Train? Train at what? I practice with accessing my spray quickly yes, 100%. Do i practice deploying it effectively? Of course. I have been forced to use it on two close encounters and its terrifying each time. Thats why you practice so hopefully your body knows how to react without thinking when your heartrate goes from 70 to 160 in the span of two seconds. It has to, because you will only get about 4 seconds before that bear is on you. I believe thats why envitro was implying about the training part but will let him speak for himself. For the record, i don't own a firearm

So is envitro as stated. Or does that not count?
And no, they are not always in pairs. They have come to our off grid camp sites multiple times and there was only one officer.
No idea how having kids with you changes that.

If you're highly trained, a gun is obviously going to be an effective option, if you think a gun might be a better option for you, make sure you're highly trained.
Don't need any dumbasses panicking with a gun while a cougar or bear rolls up on them.

Exactly this. And this is what I said earlier (or thought I had said). If you are comfortable with a gun and proficient, then you can choose to carry one with you. If you're not, make sure you carry bear spray, and if you don't want to carry spray then all the best of luck to you!

Apparently being considered "trained" only applies when the government funds it...

Considering I usually hike on shrooms, not sure I wanna bring one of my guns. Just gonna waste ammo lighting up a talking tree

For what is a pretty depressing/scary thread, this is the lighthearted image I needed in my head.

Its better to back away and avoid then throw a banger in my experience. If you are close its better to be prepared with the spray then fumbling with the banger. By all means carry them, I do. I also carry spray on my hip as well as my chest.

Is your training part of a job or role you have? Or do you train almost every day just because you like doing it? No ulterior motive to the question, just genuinely curious.
