I'm actually floored by what he's contributed to
  • He is one of the founders, with a contribution of $10 Million, to St. Mary's University College and was named an Honorary Fellow in 2004.
  • Commencing in 1992, the Allan P. Markin Engineering Entrance Awards give out 150 scholarships of $1,000 each at the University of Alberta.
  • Markin and CNRL were major donors of $3 Million each to the University of Alberta's Markin/CNRL Natural Resources Engineering Facility opened in October 2004.
  • On September 16, 2004, he donated the largest gift in the history of the University of Calgary – $18 million – to allow the university to establish the Institute for Public Health.
  • etc etc,

The guy really knows how to give back

I disagree. We have seen multiple work stoppages to fix the economic situation of the NHL. The NHL could totally fix the situation where would not need handouts to pay their outrageous salaries if they wanted to. There totally could be a league-wide ticket tax and building fund. They could even replace the salary cap with a luxury tax and use that revenue to fund areas in small markets. All these things are totally doable, but why would the NHL bother if they could just threaten to move until the taxpayers foot the bill.

Oh, gotcha. At the end of the day there is one person to blame for this, it was rotten42 for using the second post of the thread to preemptively go after anyone who has been critical of the Flames organization in the arena negotiations, then sit back and wait for anyone who responded to him to get slammed for talking poorly of Flames ownership in a positive thread. That was bull****.

He received a lot of thanks, and I'm not surprised it was the response to his post from the critical side of the ownership debate that got reprimanded, but anyone who values quality discussion rather than mudslinging should not have thanked rotten42's post.

It's the exact style of post that drags this site down at times.

Murray Edwards is responsible for more tax revenue into AB's coffers than likely the entire CalgaryPuck combined.

I think he's paid his fair share over time.

Ken King is a boob... change my mind.

I don't think that's how it works.

Nah, it starts with OP suggesting that Markin's philanthropy is somehow dependent on his investment in a hockey team.

So at what amount of cumulative income taxes paid do I get to stop paying said taxes and simultaneously demand you buy me a new car?
