Wanted Ryan + Rieder today, but Ryan + Czarnik is something I can definitely get behind. Finally some depth!

Wow. Nice to see right handed shots clearly was a priority. Don't know much about these new guys but the bottom 6 alternatives getting quite crowded.

Top 6 probables:
Gaudreau, Monahan, tkatchuk, Backlund, lindholm, Bennett (?)

Bottom 6 options:
Jankowski, Frolik, ryan, czarnik, foo, lazar, Hathaway, Brouwer, mangiapane, klimchuk, dube (late cut in camp last year)

I really hope they buyout, scratch, or waive to ahl mr. Brouwer.

I also wonder if there is still a trade they make to clear out some forwards. I sure hope it's not Bennett.

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Hearing Ryan deal is approx 3x3.125 and Czarnik 2x1.25 in CAL; word out of VAN is Beagle is 4x3 and Roussel 4x3.25

Wow, that Czarnik deal is really nice. I would have preferred Ryan stay at $3m or lower but that’s not too bad either.

That's a good chunk of change for a kid with 59 NHL games. The Flames must have really wanted to get him bad. Hopefully he lights it up. Besides the money, you have to wonder how they got a kid from Michigan with apparently 20 or more teams kicking tires on him, to come out to western Canada. (Johnny/Mony/???????)

Seriously, if Czarnik comes to camp in really good shape and doesn't look completely useless, I toss him on that line for a decent stretch and see if they can't find some magic. He looks really skilled, with a good shot. I could definitely see him breaking out.

Same with Spencer Foo.

Bruins fans like this guy. He needs a chance to show what he can do. I like this signing.

I think it is also opportunity. The need for RS players means better chance of being an NHL regular on the Flames.

That is not bad for either contract for the Flames if true.

That's a pretty good GM VS. a pretty bad one right there. Treliving isn't perfect (none are), but he's rarely overpaid anyone. The guy is a contract wizard. Beagle has too much term and Roussel has too much term AND salary.

Is he a RFA or UFA at the end of 2 years?

Seems like a solid pickup based on the little reading I have done on the player

Lazar
Dube
Brouwer
Foo?

Or at least should be the most anxious.

Lazar. He is by no means out of the competition for a line up spot. But his performance record to this point is grim.

Mangiapane. This signing almost certainly keeps him in Stockton out of training camp.

On the surface, it looks like a good signing. Adds some immediate depth to the organization in an area of need. A little concerned about the player’s size.

In the big picture I wonder if this type of signing is going to hurt long term. One of the biggest knocks against the Calgary Flames is opportunity for young players. Save the comments about how the Flames have worked in Monahan, Tkachuk, Bennett, or Gaudreau, as that is not applicable. These young guys never saw any time in the minors or were exposed to the Flames development system. I’m talking about guys who have taken a similar road to the NHL, guys like Mangipane, Foo, Klimchuk, etc. This signing has to be somewhat bitter for them, as they are at similar points in their careers and are looking for that opportunity to show what they can do. Now another free agent player will take that opportunity away from them, and they will likely have to see the buses again in the minors.

I feel good for Czarnik and the contract he was given, but at the same time I can’t help but think of our prospects who were hoping this was the year they would get a fair shake and an opportunity to play their way onto the team permanently. This must be a pretty tough signing for those players. Might also explain why we’ve seen two of our highly touted college players refuse to sign with the Flames, and instead be willing to roll the dice and go to free agency.

Anyways, I hope Czarnik brings something missing to the table and improves the team. We really need him to live up to his potential.

It's still a long summer and guys can be shuffled around during/after camp. If a young guy earns a spot you flip a July 1 signing for picks or something. Good problem to have.
