This is great news. If looch wants to play the rest of the year or even next, great. Love him on the flames so far... But it's nice to know that when he thinks he's done, he will just quit instead of hanging on to collect a pay cheque.

Ehh. All of us have had moments where we think f it I should quit.

None of us would walk away from our nothing day jobs, let alone $6m.

It’s never, ever, going to happen

I did a couple years ago. But that's because the pay sucked and my supervisor was a dick.

Interesting development. Wouldn’t be horrible for the Flames if Lucic decided he is going to go all out putting his body on the line for one more play off chance then hang them up in the off season.

I would not fret, I think we will be seeing Big Looch for 3 more seasons after this one, all in a Flames uni.

Haha. Within 2 comments of the observation about some cruel comments in here..

That seems like something Gilbert might do

Don't think that's cruel at all. If you knew you wanted your time limited at your dream job wouldn't you lay it all on the line for your last chance at glory?

It would be amazing for the Flames if Lucic retired.

I am racking my brain to think of an NHL player that retired with a substantial amount of dollars still left on their contract though.

I don’t understand the question, potentially on account of grammar.

Can you rephrase it?

I don't think what he said is a cruel comment at all. If you only had a limited time performing your dream job would you not completely empty the tnk for that last bit of glory?

Kovalchuk.

Hasek, though I think he was just on a one year. And to his credit he paid back money to Detroit for not fulfilling his obligations.

What I find concerning is that Treliving had to convince Lucic to waive his NMC to accept a trade to the Flames, and all it took was a month or so for his head coach to alienate the player so badly that he supposedly contemplated walking away from hockey, not to mention millions upon millions of dollars.

That seems like an awfully large disconnect between GM and coach doesn't it?

I have a feeling that Lucic would just sit on the LTIR rather than outright retire because he is owed a lot of money and is certainly nursing several long-term injuries.

I also don't think it's cruel to suggest a player with a $6 mln annual salary is underperforming that payday. Everyone knows it. He can sob all the way to the bank.

To be clear, Lucic seems like a good guy and a good teammate and by all means, the guy should max out his earning potential when some idiot GM offers him way too much money and term as a UFA. But it's not cruel to state the obvious, which is that, for what we get, the guy's contract hurts the team and will for its duration.

Just saying, Lucic is a good player and it would suck to lose him. It would be great in the bigger salary picture if he retired, but he still provides a unique mix of talents. He is a valuable presence, even if massively overpaid. I would be sad to see him go.
Green text missing? Lucic is a good player??

There is nothing wrong with Lucic aside from his cap hit being $5.25 million per for 3 more seasons. He's a solid depth forward that brings size, toughness and physical play.

I don't think anyone would have much of a problem with him if his cap hit was about $2 million.

He's a good 4th line player but he's extremely poor value for the cap space he takes up. Not saying he will or should but him retiring at the end of the season would be a game changer for the Flames as they then could actually pursue a guy like Hall in free agency as they would have three seasons of found money.
