I think BSD will be one of the best backups in the league this year. Given the last couple of seasons, he seems to falter when fatigue hits. The weight off of not being “the guy” and a lighter workload should be huge for him.
He has also been injured, it’s documented, and been nursing things from mid season through season end a couple of times
Interesting take. Flames D is far superior in my opinion. Craig Button called them one of the top blue lines in the NHL on the TSN preview show today. No idea why you think the Canucks had a better blueline last year than the Flames this year?
I'd say its an obvious troll job.

Judging by last year's stats none of the Canadian teams are all that hot defensively.

15th-Winnipeg
19th- Montreal
21st-Vancouver
22nd-Calgary (tied with Van)
26th- Edmonton
27th- Toronto
Overall Goals Against
10th- Win
15th- Edm
17th- Cgy

Should be lots of fun, high offence games this season.

Well I do know that the Flames' numbers should at least improve as a result of Markstrom and to a lesser extent Tanev who is a shot suppressor on D. And I hope our team commitment to defense takes a step this year too.
You guys have fun with your all-offense approach though. If I took anything away from that Chicago series it was definitely that you need more offense. Kahun, Turris and Barrie? Oh baby, you guys are set to win all the 8-7 games.
Get that cup ready, boys.

This year they have replaced Klefbom (their best defenseman) with Barrie (who cannot play defense), and their goalie tandem is 70 years old (and wasn't good last year)

“If we put Markstrom in the net and it’s just a do-over of last season where he’s in Rittich’s net, he would’ve had nine more wins, 18 more points, the Flames would’ve been first in the Pacific and he would’ve prevented 18 more goals than Rittich allowed, based on the strengths that Markstrom has and all the different shot types,” Valiquette said.

Where Markstrom really excels, however, relative to the rest of the league is in stopping the low danger shots that cause the body language of a goaltender’s teammates to sag.
And more than anything, as anyone who watched Calgary’s Game 6 calamity against the Dallas Stars in the bubble can tell you, that’s something the Flames really needed to address — and did — this offseason.

With Markstrom, we likely win game 4 and we're up 3-1
And we likely avoid the collapse in game 6.
You don't have to look any further than that, and we advance to the next round.
The Flames have had sub-par goaltending for such a long time that I think a lot of fans have either forgotten, or are too young to have experienced, how valuable good goaltending is.
Signing Markstrom was a massive score for this team. Full stop. If his play deteriorates at some point, and the last year or two of the contract are a burden, that is a small price to pay for the addition of an elite player.

With a different goalie you just can't be sure. Talbot played damn good in the first half of that series. But yeah, I can't imagine we don't go up 3-1 on Dallas with Markstrom in net for that game.
That in itself changes the complexion of the series.
And if it still came to it, I think he keeps game six close if not tied which probably gives the guys in front the confidence they need to have a chance. Cause let's be honest, they were totally deflated when the floodgates opened in that second period onward.

We've been burned by bad goaltending for so long, that I'm still very cautious about feeling confident in what we have. I assume that confidence will come with more games; I look forward to not feeling anxious about almost every shot. While I was old enough to remember prime Kipper, it's been long enough that I don't really remember how it feels to have great goaltending.

Lol yup. I have very low expectations for Tanev and Markstrom, not due to the players but because the Flames have whiffed on a lot of UFAs and goalies. So far, so good but only two games.

The only real issue with either deal is length. These first two seasons should be really good though.

It's still early days, but I feel more confident with what Markstrom has shown so far than I've felt with a Flames goalie for years. He looks stable, confident and quick. It's a promising start.
