Domed Stadium announcement
We're getting a domed stadium.
Well at Shouldice they're going to put a dome over one of the fields as part of the Grey Cup legacy project.
As a coach who hates standing on the sidelines in the winter, I say "YEEESS"

An 80, 000 person fully retractable roof domed stadium with SpaceX landing capability is long overdue in this town.
I've never been to Shouldice Park.

I first asked if it's Hellard, but apparently it's Encana.

It would have to be a large dome to fit over Hellard, Encana makes sense. This will be great to have for football and soccer in this city. I’m sure it will be well used

Wouldn't it be just a seasonal dome?

All together, the “inflatable shelter” is expected to provide 1,850 annual hours of “programmable hours” from October to May every year.
“We’ve had so much private investment in the park, and that’s unusual in terms of, I think, there’s over $8.5 million just in Shouldice Park,” said City of Calgary Councillor Ward Sutherland. “We finished it off and now it’s an opportunity to utilize it all year round. Having this partnership come around, it’s a new model for the city because it’s getting more and more challenging to do these costly things.
For the Stampeders, the facility will allow them to conduct rookie camp inside if weather is bad — which it often is during the early days of training camp — and should allow players who stay in Calgary during the off-season some time to work indoors.
It will also give the Stampeders the opportunity to practice inside during the final couple weeks of the regular season if winter hits in October — like it always does — and into the playoffs.

Yeah Hellard would be impossible because of the bleachers on the one side.
Encana would be good, wonder how they're going to get the stands and score board in that bad boy.

It seems like a hassle and expense to construct and deconstruct the Dome (I knows it's inflatable) and everything else that goes with it for at most 5 months of the year, possibly closer to 4.
Like the old soccer bubble before the annex, and the current soccer bubble at Bearspaw, it has airlocks to make sure keep inflated and of course heating and HVAC to make it usable. Even though those are semi temporary structures (Bearspaw one is coming down soon I guess, the old soccer bubble v1.0 and 2.0 both collapsed at some point in their lifespan in the 90s and 2000s IIRC) things like those special doors, the supporting framework for the structure and an HVAC system gets put in place once, and outside of it deflating by accident or malice, it's not designed to be flipped regularly let alone twice a year.
And then you'd need dressing rooms attached or inside for the winter?
Bottom line, wouldn't it be cheaper and more efficient overall just to run it year long as an inflatable dome?

For the folks who aren't familiar with this concept, here's some info from Shelbyville and what they do at the U of A.:

Lamport Stadium in Toronto, where the Wolfpack Rugby League team plays, also has a winter bubble.

We have heard rumblings of this over the last few years. My son plays football and we were very jealous of the facilities in Edmonton (Foote field). This will be a great addition to the poor facilities in Calgary and, hopefully, we see more of this in the future.
