It's very safe.
The downsides are:
A) tachyphylaxis - a few consecutive nights of use and it's effectiveness is diminished
B) side effects - dry mouth, constipation, worsening of urinary symptoms of suffering from BPH
C) it lasts >8 hours for some people and they're groggy in the morning

Any form of Law and Order, after number 3 lights out.
Serious, I've been trying melatonin and you take it several hours before you go to bed. Put's me under, but in a strange way. Even when I do wake, i'm to tired to be consciously engaged. So continue to sleep.

I've always found watching chess strategy videos very good for curing insomnia.
I recommend trying to find the "Gambit Guide" series by GM Boris Alterman. Love his accent.

Remind me never to play you chess. Bishop to King 7? Oh, you fell asleep. But this is a great suggestion.

It has completely changed my life. It helps me turn off my brain and get to sleep like nothing ever has before.

Move his pieces into unfavourable positions when he falls asleep then wake him.

CBD oil can help as well if anxiety is part of what’s keeping you awake. High THC indica strains will also do the trick, although you can become impaired.

I tried MM a couple years ago and it didn't do the trick for me, it still took a while to fall asleep and I was having crazy dreams.
I'm at the point right now where I dread bedtime, I wish I could just skip it and have it be morning.

That's strange about the dreams. Prolonged use actually all but eliminates dreams. Quitting can be hard because dreams come rushing back in and individuals can have trouble sleeping again. Also I would advise dosing 1hr - 1.5hr prior to bedtime for optimal effect.
I miss my dreams sometimes...

I would still recommend trying cbd oil drops. There is no “high” from them as they contain almost no THC, but they help treat a wide range of conditions that can affect your sleep.(anxiety, pain, inflammation etc..)

So my 17 year old has insomnia because he is scared to sleep as he gets sleep paralysis and sees shadow people. I have no idea what to do for him.

Take him to a sleep clinic and get him some professional help.
This is not a problem people need to try and solve without proper help

Last night I had a conversation with the devil.
I go through streaks of absolutely no sleep, it can last for a couple of days, or weeks where I get very little sleep.
Last night was the third night of counting ceiling dabs. This isn't like its a breathing thing, when I sleep I sleep, this is never getting to sleep.
I'd add on that I must have eaten something that just didn't work, I got home from practice and went to bed and lay there and at two in the morning, my heart started racing and I could feel it pounding, I figured it would go away, but at 4 in the morning I was contemplating going to the emergency room, before it settled down. In between that, while it was pounding away I swear there was a dude sitting in the chair in the corner of my bedroom talking to me, about what? I'm not sure. 6:30 couldn't come fast enough.
Once I got up and took a shower, the pounding went away.
Bad night man.
Crazy

Edit the Devil thing was probably a weird dream, looking at my fit tracker app, it figures I got an hour and 10 minutes of sleep last night

I just returned from a two week vacation in Seoul and then Bangkok and my sleeping schedule is super messed up. Been back for two days and I'm crashing at 2pm and waking at 11pm...

I know you're quitting smoking so I just wanted to ask if you're on anything for it or just going cold turkey? I know that pretty much all smoking cessation products have side effects that negatively impact sleep. If you're wearing a patch, take it off before bed.
