Amazing and scary, but I suppose that is the lesser of the two evils compared to being fully conscious while the plane is plummeting at a million miles an hour.
This happened in 2014 to a Greek Plane, but in this case the pilot's forgot to turn the pressurization back on after a mechanic had turned it off prior to the flight.

The one noticeable thing to the passengers would be the masks falling from the ceiling, but once the oxygen ran out, you wouldn't be conscious for very long. Dustin from Smarter Every Day did an excellent video on this, and why you should always put your mask on first.

I just re-watched that episode of Mayday. I was partially correct. During the initial crisis the pilots just watched the controls trying to understand what had happened. By the time the plane went into the steep bank the G forces prevented the co-pilot from putting both hands on the controls, so they started telling the son what to do.

I guess my recollection where I said it was baffling- as soon as things were off they should have yanked the son out of the seat.
