If you are Xmas Shopping, or just want to spend an hour or two in nerd-paradise, there is nothing like The Sentry Box:

Unless there is a MAGIC tournament going on. The smell of pizza and nerds is too much to handle.
Plus the potential for nerd aggro is tremendously high - be warned.

Rail Baron is an old game, somewhat similar to Monopoly, but instead of real estate, you buy railroads, and charge your competitors to use your tracks
Also like Sequence, Mille Borne, Pandemic and an old standby, Backgammon

I wish I could find a copy of this:
Return of The Jedi: Battle at Sarlacc's Pit
It was one of my favorite games, and now my oldest boy is able to play games and would absolutely love playing this one. Too bad I sold it at a garage sale when I was 18 and wanted more drinking money.
I also used to love playing Mystery Mansion too. Another one I'd love to have kept for my kids.

I've been playing Santiago lately. So simple, but so vicious. I love it.

If you're stuck in the chuck, Mission Fun and Games is the place to check out. Better selection than Sentry Box, although Sentry blows it out of the water for more nerdy stuff like all the war games.

They invented this thing called E-bay. People sell their old stuff on it. You can probably find a copy there.

I'm not sure what exactly constitutes a board game, but these names spring to mind:
Mancala, Carcassonne, Settlers of Catan, Monopoly, Ratrace, Pay Day, Elfer Raus, Scrabble, Cranium, Pit, Rook, Yahtzee, Absolute Balderdash, Mastermind, UNO, Bridge, Rummikub, Quao, UpWords, Apples to Apples, Bananagrams, Blokus, Set, Fluxx, Crokinole, Tichu, Mah Jongg, Hearts, Solitaire, Free Cell, Munchkin, No Thanks!, Tic-Tac-Toe, Poker, Blackjack, Cribbage, Checkers, Hangman, Taboo, Quiddler, Scattergories, Boggle, Go Fish, Mexican Train (dominoes), Wizard (trick-taking card game w/ trump), Scum/A--hole/etc.

I'm surprised only one person mentioned Talisman. I used to love that game.

I googled around a bit last year and stumbled across a local league that was advertising on a blood bowl forum. I joined up with them and got involved in the planning and scheduling and now I'm the co-organizer.
Table top blood bowl is way more fun than online blood bowl!
We actually have a league website and forum and are always looking for new players. We currently have 13 players and are hoping to have 16 for next season.

If anyone is interested in learning how to play the board game or interested in joining us, shoot me a PM. If you can put up with a few nerds, our league is pretty fun. Most of the guys are good people.
We usually meet at the Sentry Box on Sundays.

If anyone is scared of the "nerd" presence at the Sentry Box, it's pretty easy o avoid if you are just there to shop. The store is completely separate from the gaming area and the staff is really friendly. I highly recommend checking it out if you have any interest in board games

I agree - I was just being a jackass. I've had nothing but good experiences with the staff while I've shopped there.

Unfortunately some people actually do stay away from a place like the Sentry Box due to the nerd presence. I don't blame them, but in the store's case, it really is a friendly place for those with a nerd-phobia

Scrabble Shout-Out
+1 for Scrabble for me. I'm also one of the top 5 Scrabble(R) players in Canada, and a co-director of the Calgary Scrabble(R) Club.
The Calgary Scrabble(R) Club meets up Thursdays at 7pm, if anyone wants to try their hand at live Scrabble, and perhaps get into the tournament Scrabble(R) scene. (Yes, Scrabble(R) tournaments exist)
More info here: http://www.calgary374.org/AboutPage.php
Or PM me if you have any other questions.

Sklarbro Country podcast #66 had a good Scrabble take:
http://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/s...ry/id385452290
For me, Scrabble rewards people too much for memorizing ridiculous two letter words that no one ever speaks.

You get used to the strange words after playing enough. Not every one will agree on what is a word; the best we can do is abide by a dictionary decided by knowledgeable lexicographers, even if it includes some obscure words we don't like.
There is actually a rift right now, with players in North America who want to play with the official World dictionary, which has 33% more words than the official North American dictionary. i.e. 33% more obscure words.
For example, acceptable in the World dictionary are WAQF(muslim word); IWI (Maori word); YRAVISHED (an old-English inflection of ravished); and a bunch of other unrecognizable strings of letters.

There are quite a few conflict-based games that blow Risk right out of the water. Smallworld is a personal favourite of mine. It comes without the board-tipping rage and has a play time of around an hour.

I've played that game a couple times. Didn't enjoy it in the least. Some of the combinations are just too powerful.
