I’m not suggesting it but I’d be interesting to have two Teams Canada with the best players evenly dispersed between the two. It’d be cool to take gold and silver or bronze, although that’d be very difficult.

Word is with Covid messing up this and next season there's likely no way the NHL sends players to the Olympics in 2022.

Ok, fun police over and out.

Word from who? It's been reported that it's in the new CBA and the players are pushing for it

Please remind me of how Canada performed in 2006. I tend to remember an offensively inept team that relied in large part on veteran players who Gretzky hoped would repeat 2002.

That is a really old roster with most of the players being above the age of 30 at the start of the tournament. I think that there is something to be said for bringing in young talent such as Lafreniere, especially when you look at the disaster that was 2006 and the lessons that should have been learned from that. If that is who team Canada puts together they will have a forward group that 3/4 of which is 30 years old or over. I would anticipate a player like Barzal taking a step forward and claiming a spot.

Bergeron - 36
Marchand - 34
Crosby - 34
Giroux - 34
Stamkos - 32
Tavares - 31
O'Reilly - 31
Seguin - 30
Hall - 30

Bergeron, Marchand, giroux are players most likely to replaced with someone young, if their play has fallen off a bit. Hall/Seguin are certainly not locks.

That makes the team younger right away.

It's really unfortunate that Giordano never got a chance to play for Canada in a best on best tournament. He probably deserved to be on the 2014 Olympic team based on how he was playing at the time, and the 2016 World Cup. And then the 2018 Olympics he would have made it but NHL players didn't get to go, and now he'll probably be too old for 2022.

Short tournament, they love to pick for instant chemistry:

Marchand - Crosby - Bergeron
McDavid - Mackinnon - Stone
Huberdeau - Tavares - Marner
Schwartz - ROR - Point

Not sure if Schwartz and ROR play together a lot?
Benn-Seguin, Couturier-Giroux are possible pairings, too; of course others may emerge by that point.

LD is a real crapshoot. If Pietrangelo or Doughty have a decent enough Canadian D partner at the time I think they're odds are as good as any...

Chabot - Pietrangelo
Muzzin - Doughty
Edmundson/Gardiner - Hamilton (not sure who he normally pairs with or would be paired with then)
Makar

If Bergeron slows down a bit, it would be fun to see a Marchand-Crosby-Mackinnon line.

Extras: O’Reilly, Point

Chabot – Pietrangelo
Rielly – Hamilton

Extras: Morrissey, Weber

Can't see a world where Brayden Point doesn't make it. Cale Makar is top 4 probably. Burns might be too far over the hill in 2 years.

We've seen a lot of wunderkind defensemen regress a lot in years to follow.

It's remarkable how much more stacked RHD is than LHD right now.

Pietrangelo
Doughty
Letang
Weber*
Makar
Burns*
Hamilton
Ekblad

LD:
Giordano*
Keith*
Chabot

Even the next tier seems to be more RD than LD

Theodore/Rielly/Morrissey/Muzzin/Brodie**/Sanheim?/Gardiner
Myers/Dumba/Spurgeon/Ellis/Severson/Barrie/Subban?/Manson/Montour/Schultz/Parayko

I'm sure my quick rankings aren't particularly accurate and are certainly missing players, but I think you can probably get 10-12 deep in RD that are as good as the top 5 or 6 LD...

In 2 years the left could look especially weak.

The D is much harder to project than the forwards right now
