Default Evander Kane assessed an automatic three-game suspension

https://www.tsn.ca/san-jose-sharks-e...-ban-1.1374614

That's a shame.

Do dirty bag things, get dirty bag consequences. He clearly shoves the linesman, while looking at him... after likely slashing him (although that looked like he meant to slash the Knights' player).

Kane's a hothead with a sub 100 IQ. Not surprising he gets suspended for something stupid.

Dude slashed a linesman (accidentally), and then got up and pushed the linesman (on purpose).

Kane should be suspended, and I’m surprised it’s only 3 games.

Apparently the rulebook allows for 3, 10 and 20 game suspensions for abuse of official. So, if Wideman's was eventually a 10, then 3 makes sense here

That linesman looks like a goof. What on earth is he doing?

Looking at the rules it looked like he should have got 10. Kane is a dirtbag. Maybe the refs need to throw his track suit in the showers.

I watched a little bit of the game. It was starting to get a little out of hand at that point. I think the ref was trying to be proactive by keeping the players apart.
No excuse ever to shove a ref. 3 games seems appropriate.

After watching the video, I would say that this incident is not suspension worthy at all.

Exactly this. Kane had already fought someone else earlier in the game. This was clearly meant to escalate an already tense situation. The linesman did his duty in attempting to de-escalate (is that a word?) the aggression and violence.

Kane was out of control. He's lucky he didn't get the mandatory 10 games.

If it was just the push that's one thing. But he already accidentally slashed the ref when the ref was trying to hold back Engelland.

I laughed when he used the "I get treated differently why wasn't the ref holding back Engelland" defense, because the ref had tried to get between them and hold back Engelland and got slashed because of it.

Keeps him out of two games against the Knights which helps keep things calm too and based on the bolded in the rule I do think it's the right ruling, as he was clearly trying to get free from the official who grabbed him.

Rule 40.4 Automatic Suspension – Category III reads as follows:

Quote:
"Any player who, by his actions, physically demeans an official or physically threatens an official by (but not limited to) throwing a stick or any other piece of equipment or object at or in the general direction of an official, shooting the puck at or in the general direction of an official, spitting at or in the general direction of an official, or who deliberately applies physical force to an official solely for the purpose of getting free of such an official during or immediately following an altercation shall be suspended for not less than three (3) games."

What the hell?

Rule 40

Quote:
Automatic Suspension - Category II - Any player or goalkeeper who deliberately applies physical force to an official in any manner (excluding actions as set out in Category I), which physical force is applied without intent to injure, shall be automatically suspended for not less than ten (10) games.

Surprised he didn’t get 10 like Vermette.

Although I still think Vermettes was dumber as there was no preceding physical contact in his case.

I feel like the two-handed slash at Engelland (at the time was being held by a ref) that also hit the ref should have been the primary reason for the penalty, and gotten 10 games minimum. That slash could easily have broken something like a fingerbone.

Just inexcusable out of control behavior.

People watch a 10 second clip and blame the linesman...Kane was running around like an idiot all game. It's pre season for Christ sake he is lucky it's three.

I think the refs put it down as verbal abuse of official instead of Physical abuse of official. Hence why it was a smaller suspension than the automatic 10 games.

IMO Kane statements were very close if not actual implied racist motivation. Im not surprised the refs decided to err on the side of being too lenient. No body wants accusations like that clouding the game.

Players are not allowed to initiate contact with officials. Period. In a sport as fast, physical and intense as hockey there is just no room for interpretation here.

I doubt that's the case.

I think NHL mostly just didn't want to see a star player miss a good chunk of the season because of a preseason game.
