What the heck is this???
VIDEO
It looks like a butterfly and a wasp had sex and created the ugliest wasp like creature known to man.
Anyone know what this thing is? Took this video about half an hour ago in my front yard.
Edit: switch the settings to 1080p HD for a clearer view.

I thought it was a pretty cool thread. I don't think many people even know such a thing exists.

That's pretty cool. I thought it was a hummingbird that looks like a moth but I guess it's the other way around.

It crossed my mind, but I'm too much of a puss to kill anything, including ugly insects.

They are probably the least intimidating insects/bugs out there. Certainly much more appealing than spiders.
And, if you care about it, they are quite good for your garden.

I have had hummingbird moths here a couple of times as well, at this time of year, and they are on the same flowers as they were on mine, petunias. When they have been at my place, they seem to be noticed around dusk...I would guess because they are a moth.
They are pretty rare around Calgary and pretty well harmless as well. I could stand right beside them and they were not intimidated at all.

They are common around here, and are responsible for a lot "false hummingbird" sightings!
Not to be confused with the hummingbird hawk-moth,of course
That's an Old World species.
Unfortunately, we don't see that many hummingbirds here. I envy the folks further north who post pics of 20 odd hummingbirds of different species hovering around their feeders.
If you like birds and butterflies and are coming to South Florida,
http://butterflyworld.com is a must. They've got quite a collection of hummingbirds in lovely enclosed aviaries that you walk through. It's fun to see them buzz around. And of course butterflies and moths...
