One of the small dogs was killed by the larger animals when the attack happened while the 59-year-old woman was out walking Wednesday morning in Lethbridge.
Area residents rushed to her aid and helped get one of her pooches to safety in a nearby yard, but the second dog was critically injured and died at a veterinary clinic where the woman had taken it for treatment.

Looks like 1 dog to me.
But maybe I should read it again.

It was one dog dead, the second was safely moved to a neighbor's yard.
Source: I know the victim of the attack.

Oops, I apologize. Thanks for the clarification, guys. I'll leave my above posting instead of editing it out so it doesn't confuse the chronology of the conversation.
Glad to hear one of the dogs is okay, maverickstruth.

Pit bull bites baby in dog park causing minor injuries
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgar...m.html?cmp=rss
Quote:
A 5-month-old baby suffered minor injuries after being bitten by a pit bull on Wednesday evening.
The baby's father was walking the family dog in an off-leash area on the 100 Block of Bernard Drive N.W. at around 6 p.m. MT.
He was wearing a carrier sling with the baby in it.
When they crossed paths with two teenagers walking a pit bull, the two dogs began to fight.
As the father bent down to break it up, the baby fell out of the sling and was immediately bitten by the pit bull, police said.
The baby was taken to the Alberta Children’s Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
Officials confiscated the pit bull. Police are investigating.

I do think part of the problem is that, on occassion, the people walking the pitbull are not going to be able to step in when it loses its mind. Like in this case, I wonder how old the teenagers were? I wouldn't want a couple of thirteen year olds taking a pitbull to an off leash park.
I've seen a mom with a baby in a stroller and another in one of those baby bjorn things on her chest and walking two dogs. One was a pitbull. I've seen a very slight woman with two pitbulls on leashes. I just don't see how they could possibly wade in and stop one of these dunder heads when they lose it on another dog or worse, another person.

I didn't see that it was the pitbull that started this? Nor have I seen any video of what the incident looked like.
Was the pitbull protecting or attacking?
Did the other dog start it? Which dog came to which dog, maybe the pitbull was at its owner's side the whole time.
What kind of dog and owner was the other group? Did they fail to control their dog?
Did the dog lunge at the child or did the child get its own hands in the way?
I would think if this was a pitbull with the intent to bite a child the result would be described as worse.
Sounds like arms and dogs were flailing around and a child's arm got into a mouth and when the dog realized it had a person it DID NOT bite to its potential and released. It may not even have bitten the kid and the kids arm just scraped the teeth of the dog leaving behind a red mark and a overactive parent.
I guess it depends on what you see in your head when you read it and what I see.

Did I say the pitbull started this?
Anyway, I'm not trying to vilify the breed although I personally don't trust them as much as other breeds. My issue is with the owners of these dogs more than anything.

perhaps if your pitbull rips apart things you should do the right thing and not take it out into public....then again pitbull owners clearly aren't at the top of the evolutionary ladder.
SeeBass's post is hilarious, I've never heard of a dogbite being reclassified/excused as a kids arm scraping past the dogs mouth!!!! As if dogs don't know what they're tasting/biting!!!
