Islanders place Sebastian Collberg on unconditional waivers
Arthur Staple @StapeNewsday
#Isles have placed Sebastian Collberg on uncondtional waivers. Forward acquired in Vanek-MTL deal didn't pan out. Off to Europe.
Big piece of the Vanek trade.
Also a prospect lots of people wanted in the 2012 draft over Jankowski.

IIRC Collberg won the poll that year. Or was it the day after round 1 poll?

It's always fun to look back at drafts years later. Thank God we dodged this bullet though. I think Jank-daddy will be worth the wait.

I recall being interested in Collberg. High 2nd, if I recall correctly. Very much a crap shoot with these guys.

Consensus pick in the pre-draft poll was Collberg. While we have yet to see Jankowski perform in the NHL, it's a good thing that CP does not make decisions sometimes. Could you imagine completely butchering the 14th pick (at the time) overall with Collberg?

Collberg's lack of scoring in the SEL concerns me. I haven't watched him personally, but the stats suggest that his style of game does not translate playing with men.
I think Collberg is the riskier pick, but from the scouting reports I believe he has the potential to be a bigger impact player than Maatta, IF he can adapt. He will have to be either a top 6 forward or bust.
I choose Maatta because the Flames really can't afford another bust in the 1st round (especially if they pick only once in the first round).

He probably could develop a bit in the AHL, but it looks like he's already off the Europe.
It looks like Sureloss got him spot on though.

Remind me how unconditional waivers work? Just a waiver system for a player going to Europe? No claiming involved?

I'm assuming someone could claim him but he cannot play in the playoffs in the NHL or AHL.

I was one of the true believers, only 6% of the people that voted, that picked Jankowski. Was #1 on my list @14 then, would still be #1 on my list today.
It sucks that Collberg did not turn out. That whole situation with Vanek turned into a huge mess for the Islanders. I don't think it could have went worse for them.

I'm going to go ahead and stop this right here. I'm sorry, this just has disaster written all over it.

It's the same as any other waivers scenario except Unconditional Waivers are required for a team who is looking to buy out a player's contract. The cost to make a claim from Unconditional Waivers is also significantly lower than making a regular waivers claim.
When you put in a waiver claim, you have to pay a fee based on the player's level of experience... ranging from $3,375 for a player with more than 9 years experience, to $90,000 for a goalie with less than 2 years experience.
The cost for an Unconditional Waiver claim is only $125.
If a player is claimed from Unconditional Waivers, the team that waived him loses any other rights to the player that they would have had with regular waivers (hence the name "Unconditional").
There has to be something more to this story because he's still on him entry-level contract and could be sent to the AHL next year, which would cost less than buying him out will cost. I believe they could have also lent him to a team in Europe for next season and retained his RFA rights until he's 27.
They're basically severing all ties to him and washing their hands of him. That's extremely rare for a player who just turned 22.
