Tell the public they are going to spend 90% of the cap.

The other 10% that the team was going to spend on player salaries, goes into funding the new arena.

I am sure that will be enough to bridge the gap between the city and the Calgary flames.

Thoughts?
However they want to pay for it is their business. If they don't want to ice a competitive team purely out of spite for the city that's up to them.

Is this even true? Does that mean if you disagree with Donald Trump's executive decisions, your not proud to be an American? Sad, but true.

Just spitballing but 40 mil up front is the difference in the city contribution on the plan plus the city wants their 185 mil back over 35 years which the flames dont wanna do.... That has a present value of 110 mil using current prime interest rate.
The city's proposal has them contributing $185M (in cash and land) and getting it back in property taxes.

The Flames proposal has the city funding $225M from a levy that is already committed.

So effectively they're at least $410M apart.

That's 4 Connor McDavids

If the city pays for a new arena, we will get 4 Connor McDavids

Is the whole Dome demolition thing a bit of a red herring? I mean whether its a City contribution to the Flames or just a cost of the development they want anyway, surely there's a way to keep it but not compete with the new stadium.
Something like no acts which could easily be in the new arena may go in the old Dome. So like the Dome can have super-dogs and the Wiggles, but U2 or Madonna can't can't go in there haha.

No, CSEC wants the super-dogs and Wiggles revenue too. 100%. All of it.

I believe the Dome being demolished is a part of the land swap deal with the Stampede board.

So that's not even a Flame demand but a part of the land swap?

Maybe the Flames could afford to pay more if they stopped paying Eric Francis whatever they're paying him to shill for them: http://calgaryherald.com/sports/hock...er-nhl-centres

Mayoral candidates weigh-in.

Chabot

Quote:
"It's one thing to say you want your cake and you want to eat it too, but you're asking us to spoon feed it to you," Chabot said.
"It would be an insult to Calgarians for us to foot that much of the bill without some sort of recovery from it whether that be through taxes or rent, or something."

Nenshi

Quote:

"The proposal I read about this morning was a little bit news to me. It wasn't quite what we thought was on the table," Nenshi said.
Specifically, he took issue with what was being called "up-front" funding. Nenshi said a portion of what the Flames classified as the $275 million they had been willing to pony up consisted of a user fee or "ticket tax" of $150 million.
Nenshi said that $150 million would have been financed by the city.
"In their proposal they pay zero rent, zero property tax, and they get 100 per cent of all of the revenues from all sporting events, concerts and special events," Nenshi said.
"I'm not sure where that turns into a 50/50 partnership."
Smith

Quote:
He said principally the deals compare different things, on one hand the Flames deal doesn't include the costs of upgrades to transit or the demolition of the Saddledome. But on the other the city deal didn't consider a CRL, Smith said.
Smith said he would support tax dollars going towards a stadium if the deal was akin to the one reached in Edmonton, where it lead to the development of an entire sports and entertainment district but he wasn't clear if either of these deals met that mark.

We're just returning the favour in kind to the Flames. If they think they can St. Louis Rams us after twenty-five years of ineptitude then they can #### right off.

Funny. I just for the first time looked up who Bill Smith was and this was the second sentence on his site:

"We need to control reckless spending, make streets safer and rein in excessive tax increases."

Wait.... I thought the lack of City support for the Arena was all Nenshi's fault?

You'd think some political opportunist would jump all over having city taxpayers fund the arena since it is such a great deal for taxpayers no?

Can't wait for some candidate to make building the new Arena, with the taxpayer paying the majority of the costs, the pillar of their campaign strategy....

Ironically it seems like the conservative people taking up this stance. It's so odd.
