Icon44 Kovalchuk decides to stay in Russia for another season

Kovalchuk will return to KHL for one more season, Post has learned. Will become free agent next 7/1. Am told NJ made effort to make deal.

Totally makes sense for him. He can play in the Olympics, make a bunch of money for another year in the KHL, and can choose where he wants to be when he returns.

Good. Honestly if he came back he'd just be another slow bum. He's not an exciting player to watch anymore.

our 2020 2nd round pick is likely traded.

2018 - NYI
2019 - ARZ (assuming we make the playoffs)
2020 - NYI

Pressure to stay was put on Kovalchuk by Putin's inner circle. Gold in election year is a huge priority for Russia. Still, he wanted NHL.

With every passing year, there should be less interest in Kovalchuk. Kind of a risky move for him if he really wants to return to the NHL.

Makes me wonder where things fell apart? Too short of a list and too high of a salary expectation from Kovalchuk? New Jersey getting too greedy? No interest from other teams at all?

Too bad. I was looking forward to seeing him in the NHL again - though I wasn't sure if it was from a sheer "another elite player to watch" standpoint, or a "Does he suck now?" standpoint.

Putin wants to ensure he gets 97% of the vote and doesn't drop to 97% like he'll get if they don't win big in the Olympics.

I didn't know what was more funny, the part about there actually doing an election or Russia winning the gold.

I really wanted to see Kovy play. But it was always a complicated endeavor. Not only did Jersey have to find a team that Kovy wanted to play for, but that team also needed to accept Kovy's asking price in a contract. Plus said training partner also needed to accept the several risks of Kovy, namely:

1) Olympic flight risk
2) Retirement risk
3) Not NHL calibre anymore

Why would this be funny? They're the clear favourite with no NHLers involved (except Ovechkin apparently).

I think Russia has a good chance of winning gold. Very much a better chance of gold than engaging in a fair democratic process.

Good. NHL is better without him in it.
