Just what I enjoy as a fan more.
Well, there is a Pittsburg winning "model". Washington and Edmonton have no model, they have not won anything yet.

I hope Ferland catches Mcdavid with a clean hard body check the first game of the season.I don't wish bad on anyone but that would be epic for the BOA!!

That would be epic. Unfortunately Ferland would probably be given 5 and a game with McDavid awarded 3 penalty shots.

And the forum get's hockey squirrly as of now. Honestly, it's not cool to wish for an athlete to get injured.

He didn't say injure. He said he hopes Ferly hits McDavid cleanly.

I should have been more clear. Based on the officiating in the BOA last season Ferland would be kicked out for a clean hit on McDavid. I also forgot to add the Oilers would also be awarded 2 free slashes on Gaudreau.

I have to be honest, I hope for Ferly to drive him threw the boards and out on to 104th ave. Nothing against the kid but I'm so tired of the media and fans wetting their pants and circle jerking 24/7

Remember in his rookie year when he came back from injury, the hype. CBC's Hockey Night in Canada will cover Connor McDavid's return. For weeks leading up to the game, commercials for the return of Connor McDavid. They had slow sensual spots of Connor arriving at the arena, and then the walk to the dressing room. Then slow motion shots to that song from ghost while Connor in a skin tight T-Shirt leaned over to tie his skates. While the CBC commentators team breathlessly commented that Yes indeed the savior of all things good had risen and was going to save us all.

CBC Newsnet broke off their reporting of the cure for cancer to breathlessly cover Connors walk to the ice for the pregame skate.

Kelly Hrudey's head exploded, while Kypreos slowly slid his hand under the desk and Don Cherry licked McLeans neck.

No player is worth 12.5 million in a cap era.

Everyone knew Edmonton would have to pay him, I just think its funny he is the highest paid player and hasn't won anything. I get it, he won the Art Ross and the Ted Lindsey.

I love this signing though even more than giving Russel 4 million per. I couldn't help myself but laugh. If the Oilers pay Draisaitl more than 6.5 per, they are seriously F'ed. Cant wait for them to pay him 8. With Lucic and Nugent-Hopkins at 6, these guys are a bunch of beauties. Look out NHL, the Oilers are for real.

Tree is looking like a king after signing Monahan and Johnny to under 7 million dollar deals long term. Even the Gio contract is good compared to the Russel deal.

Anyways, just my two cents.

Were you saying the same thing when Crosby signed for $8.7 million on his second contract? This is a lower percentage of the cap than Crosby's second contract was.

It's also a significantly lower percentage than the contract Iginla signed coming out of the lockout.

The $12.5M ensures McDavid will be the highest paid player over the term of the contract. At the moment he only needed to be paid over $10.5M for that to happen but that may change.

The test of whether that is an over payment or not will occur in the next few years when Matthews, Laine, Bobrovsky, Tavares, Doughty, Karlsson, and Backstrom will all require new contracts. If those players are all signed for less than $11M then McDavid is overpaid, if those players sign for $11-12M then McDavid is paid just about right, and for some reason if they get paid more than $12M then the McDavid contract is a great deal.

Are you saying if Edmonton waived McDavid you wouldn't want him on this contract?

The McDavid contract will never be a great deal. Let's be real here.

Watching McDavid play for your team is one thing. It'd be downright exciting. But having his contract on the books, killing the rest of your team's build? No thanks. I'd want no part of that.

Right now it is not a great deal but it could be by the end of the contract. If for example the cap goes up further next year and Laine, Matthews, and Tavares all sign for $12M per then I'd rather have McDavid for $500k more.

In all likely hood though the cap will stagnate and those players will sign for around $10.5M per meaning McDavid will be overpaid.
