wow, didn't see this coming. However, I guess this is to make room for Andersson.

Will he need to go through waivers again at the beginning of the season in order to be sent down (assuming he isn't claimed)?

He's a replacement level player. I don't know why any one would give up a pick for him.

If there was a pick to be had, do you not think Tre would have made the trade?

Kulak just isn't that good.

Is this just a play to ensure Kulak gets a lower contract in his arb case? If he goes unclaimed before that - one would assume it would hurt his case for a better contract.

As Friedman suggests, this is likely to set a market as they expect him to pass. Would be kind of funny if he doesn't though.

I would be flabbergasted if he wasn't snapped up.

I just wanted to use the word flabbergasted.

All I'm saying is I thought teams would have offered a late round pick for a young D who held his own in the NHL last year. He's likely an upgrade for many teams' 3rd pairings. Apparently I'm wrong...or we'll see him get snapped up and this was potentially a miscalculation just to gain leverage in the arbitration hearing.

It's a foregone conclusion he won't be claimed. Who would claim a guy going into arbitration?

It seems to me that with Kulak, you are at the complete mercy of the arbitrator. You cannot walk away from the deal, just constrain it for one year.

I wonder if this is a tactic to show him and the arbitrator that no one else wants him, or if the arbitrator ignores this because teams may have ignored him due to the uncertainty.

If someone picks him up, it opens up a spot for a young guy. If no one picks him up, perhaps this helps negotiations in the "you can work with us on a favourable contract or you can be out of the league" sense.

A team with bad defence and lots of cap space.

Treveling is banking that Kulak will not be picked up, and will use it as a reality check for Kulak that he is asking too much money. I do not expect him to be picked up.

hmm, i didn't even realize there were waivers this time of year when teams can go over the salary cap (and i think contract limit)......

What exactly is the point of waivers this time of year?!

I always wonder how other GMs find out about these things. Do they receive an email notification on their Outlook? Is it from a staff member or does the league have an automated system to relay all of the information.
