McDavid: 66 pts in 63 games
Wright..: 66 pts in 58 games

pretty crazy.

And yes, McDavid went to the WJC that year, though he wasn't much of a factor. Also, McDavid is(was) much bigger than Wright (which matters in this tournament)

It will be interesting to see if they take him for the experience. But again, I think it will be tough considering the available depth this year.
McDavid wasn't bigger than Wright at 16.

Yes he was. He was listed at 6'1" 190. Very doubtful that he was 190 at 16 but that is what he was listed at.

Wright is listed at 5'11" 180.

Now, I personally believe that height is a lousy, and way over-used argument for size - IMO, it should be about strength, especially core strength (think about the difference between Martin St Louis vs Gaudreau).

However, in this case, both are 16 year olds in a tournament for 19 year olds. They simply don't have the strength, period. But a little height doesn't hurt.

Anyway, ignoring all that, the reason I believe that Wright won't be there isn't because of size, it will be because of the depth of the team. We just witnessed one of the deepest drafts in history. And we have the rare situation where the NHL won't be in action, further adding to the depth.

McDavid wasn't really a factor in 2014. And as amazing as Wright is, he wouldn't be a factor on this team. Which is why I think it's a long shot that he makes it.

Meh, Team Canada always always slots in the "generational" 16 year olds. Even with all the available 19 year olds I still think Wrights essentially a locked into the next 2 WJC tournaments. He will likely be a full time top line center in the NHL his draft season.

If there ever was a time for the Flames to win a #1 pick it'll be 2022. Shane Wright is amazing.

If Zary doesn’t make the cut for the team as a Center, I wonder what the chances are that they bring him as a winger?
Has he played both positions in junior?
I don’t know enough about the majority of the prospects on the list, but I selfishly really want to watch a couple Flames prospects play for Canada in the WJC

Scott Wheeler makes his picks for rosters at the Athletic.

Link

Pay wall so just a quick summary.

Canada:
Pelletier makes it (extra), Zary doesn't

USA:
Wolf as backup

Russia:
Both Kuznetsov and Nikolayev make the team

I think his point on Zary being close is an interesting one. As much as I'd love to see both Pelletier and Zary make it, I doubt both make it. I think Pelletier is closer to 3rd line role that Wheeler thinks. The one I'm excited about is what you missed about Chechelev making as third goalie. Teams ride the hot hand, right now Chechelev is very hot so has a decent chance. Considering how little I know about him besides stats, would be fantastic to see him at world juniors.

Zary was tied for 20th (by my count) in the entire CHL for scoring. If he has a good camp, I could easily see him making the cut.

I think they have a strong chance.
The author has both Dach and Cozens on the team. Not sure about the timing of NHL training camp and the WJC's this year, but I can't see Dach being made available if the NHL has started. Cozens has a strong chance of making Buffalo as well so who knows.
Would be nice to see at least one of our guys make the team.

I could see Dach and Cozens being available, because even if they go all the way, they'll only miss a few NHL games if the season does indeed start on Jan.1. Last year's WJC ended on Jan.5th.

EDIT:Point was already made on the previous page.

Dach getting permission to play really puts a strain on Zary's chance.

Dach
Cozens
Byfield

Those three are, IMO, undisputedly ahead of him on the depth chart. It would take a surreal camp from Zary and a very poor camp by Byfield to have that change. I don't think he will have a chance to knock off Dach and Cozens.
Zary is realistically fighting with Lapierre, Newhook, Suzuki, and Tomasino for the 4th C spot. It will be a pretty tough fight.

Not going to affect the forward makeup, but University of Michigan's coach is unsure if he is willing to let d-man Owen Power attend Canada's camp.

If Zary makes it, it obviously won't be as a centre considering who will probably be available this year. However, I am sure there will be extra centres taken and pushed to the wings. If there are injuries, you have a competent centre being able to take over. Plus, you have centres to take draws on strong side vs weak side, waived, etc. Zary also has that 'traditional snarl' for Team Canada as well.

I can see him making it, but he is right on that bubble. His versatility might get him onto the team, but that's a really competitive team this year.

Yeah they are doing a longer camp mainly because the OHL and WHL haven't started up.

QMJHL and Euro players have an advantage because they have been playing games for the most part.

Interesting, it looks to me that they have put the "stronger" forward group on white and the "stronger" d group on Red.
