Default Best Streaming Device for Seniors

I'm thinking of buying my parents a streaming device so that they can watch non-cable services like Amazon Prime. Which one is best as far as easiest navigation? I don't want something too expensive as I don't know how much they will end up using it.

I was going to get them a Fire Stick but read that navigating around it can be a bit confusing for someone who struggles with technology. I also don't want anything that you control with your phone or a laptop/tablet since my dad already has enough trouble with his iPhone. They don't have a 4k TV and the chances of them ever getting one are slim.

If he has an iPhone then Apple TV is probably easiest but it's not cheap at around $220.

The new Chromecast Google TV is $70 and fairly easy to use but you need to set it up with your phone. It works on its own after that though.

I'd get them the fire stick. The voice search is actually pretty good.

Yeah, I was about to order one on Staples last night since they don't require a minimum for free shipping but figured I'd ask around before deciding. The Lite is still available on Amazon but I figured if I were to get one I might as well pay $5 more for the better remote.

My dad is a senior and I got him a fire TV cube to replace his Apple TV. He really likes it because he doesn't have to hunt for the remote and everything works by voice. It is a little odd how he always thanks Alexa for turning the TV on or off, though.

Chromecast w/ Google TV. Literally just a few buttons and all the recommendations from all of their streaming services including Amazon Prime on their front page. Big plus is it can control the TV and volume on one tiny remote.

Agreed. And if you buy a Roku TV, the remote comes with some pre-configured buttons which I've found to be a big plus for older people. Click Netflix button, done.

If you have an iPhone a Roku stick is the best choice. It has airplay now. Got one for my in laws. So they can also watch their bootleg Korean videos that play on the iPad using screen mirroring.

When they take over, Alexa will remember your dad was nice to them and he will be spared.

They aren't that old. lol I'm talking 60s. My mom isn't technically considered a senior yet but she's a couple years off.

I talked to them tonight and it sounds like I might end up going with the Roku. They want the easiest interface (I showed them both and they said the Roku looks easier) and don't really care if they have voice command or if they have to use another remote to control the volume and tv power.

Good manners are considered odd behavior now?

I have all the seniors in my life on Roku Streaming Sticks. Easy to use, and all the streaming services (minus CBC Gem) that they want are on there.

You're missing the most important remote of all. You! Or maybe a sibling or grand kid or something.

I honestly think we are going straight back to the era where the kids are the best remote. My parents don't use tech because they are worried that they'll break it. It's idiot proof, you can't break it!

I don't thank my digital assistant, but I definitely say please. IMO, loosening regular politeness, even on an inanimate object, is giving the terrorists a win.

Fire Stick HD is on sale right now for $45.
All Amazon devices are on sale for Black Friday.

Best advice I can provide is get them the same thing that you have, so it's easier to explain over the phone... saving you a trip over to help them watch something. From experience.
