It's utterly surreal to visit the oilers fanboard. They are currently unable to process the fact that their defense is bad AND their goaltending is bad. It ranges from anger at signing Mike Smith instead of _________ (because now Smith is injured cuz he's old, originally everyone felt he was part of an unstoppable duo) to despair over only having 4 Giordanos with Klefbom out. But they can't figure out if the defense is awful, it doesn't mean your goalies are good. Everything's bad. Has been for a long time.
So now they are mad at Bear for not being superman, mad at koskinen, mad at Holland, it's amazing. It's like they just didn't watch the last two seasons of fire-drill defense. Credit to one poster who admitted that this is basically a worse team than what got run by the hawks in the play-down. But the amount of kool-aid up there is staggering.

This is easily a worse team than last year. Easily. Its basically the same forward group other than some mix-and-match nonsense with replacement-level fodder, their defense got significantly worse and their goaltending, which wasnt good to begin with, just got older.
They somehow need to convince the NHL to let Kostinem use a Lacrosse Goalie's stick instead of a glove.
Its going to look like a better team because of the division realignment, and we're going to hear about Holland pulling a rabbit out of a hat and dramatically improving an ailing roster.
But in reality its just smoke being blown up their ass. Which is okay...the Oilers, their media and their fans just love having smoke blown up their ass.

I just want to say how much I appreciate this thread.. I've lived behind enemy lines in the socialist ####hole of Edmonton for many years and I've gleefully spoken to many about the Oilers woes. The depth of the delusion about the team never abates. Watching the failures and excuses pile up year after keeps me warm in this horrible place.

They seem blind to the fact that after a hot start last season, they were pretty mediocre. After the first 20 games or so, they weren't even playing at a playoffs pace. I think they were only like 2 or 3 games above 0.500 in their last 50 games or something like that. Their head start made them look good in the standings all season, but they were barely hanging on to that cushion.

Oh yeah, lets not forget that the season being suspended was the best thing that could have happened for them because they were in complete freefall.

Shorter season means teams can't afford having slumps and remaining competitive. A faceplant right out of the gate will all but doom them.

When you consider things other than pure offence, their top 3 forwards are not even close to top 3 in the league.
