I do wonder if the GOP appointments in the Supreme Court have been just playing the long game in some of their decisions lately to appear unbiased and build some trust that the system still works regardless of political leanings of the judges, saving their real power for decisions that will really matter for their goals. Only rule in Trump's favour when it really counts. Like maybe the upcoming election.

Absolutely. And don't be surprised if the GOP appoints a woman to the Supreme Court next week, to appear inclusive. Amy Coney Barrett is the front runner.

This country is so ####ed up right now. McConnell will prove to be nothing but a political opportunist and push through the nomination of Trump's picking, even with the Garland blocking to be held as a precedence.
The Following 5 Users Say Thank You to Lanny_McDonald For This Useful Post:
You have GOP Senators that are in toss-up elections will go on the record saying they will uphold the 2016 precedent of no new appointments in an election year.
No new SCOTUS judge before November 4.
Regardless the outcome of the election, the lame duck Senate will ram through the next justice.
GOP have a better chance at keeping swing states and still get their justice.
Note, its their justice not Trump. Trump is the pawn in this SCOTUS long game. McConnell will say "Appoint So-in-So" thats who Trump will appoint and voila. Done.
If Trump loses and moves his retirement home to the suburbs of Moscow, the Pence will make the appointment.
That's my worry.

The gaslighting POS says it's justified because "the American people voted in a republican senate to stand up for republican interests". He conveniently fails to mention that the Senate isn't designed to represent the American people, it's specifically designed to let sparsely populated states call the shots at the expense of everyone else.
If the Republicans jam thru a new justice, pack the courts. Go to war with them in congress/senate. Never cooperate with them again. Burn it down. Figuratively.
I would expect Collins, and other Senators in toss up elections to say this.
Will they honor it? I trust Susan Collins about as much as I trust a wet fart.
She'll talk tough for a few days/weeks, but eventually she'll fall in line like she always does.
Also Lindsey Graham said today that he'll be confirming Trump's nominee, completely contradicting what he said in 2016 of course. Good grief, these people are such spineless weasels.
