There’s nothing wrong with pointing out the bad things in the world.

But if you’re going to claim the world is getting worse, then expect to be challenged to provide empirical evidence of this global trend.

Also, pointing out the overall condition of humanity has been improving for generations is not a dismissal of concerns - it’s giving context.

We're never going to get to Nuclear net zero unless another strategic weapon comes along that provides deterrence which is never going to go away as a concept.

We're never going to get a war head reduction to the point of a theoretically winnable war. The question is going to be how much over kill is needed. If there is ever a 100% workable defense shield we'll see another rise in war heads, or a leap forward in penetrative technology.

But no Nuclear Weapons are nowhere near unprecedented levels. even going by explosive yields.
I never said they are at unprecendented levels. The point is, they were ebbing for a while, but in recent years they've begun to increase once again. We're going backward in that regard, not forward, and it's worrying.

The other thing to keep in mind is that not all nuclear warheads are equal. Nukes that are manufactured today are more sophisticated than ones made in the 50s.

A lot of things have improved, sure.

But in terms of climate change, we are, in fact, in a worse position today than we were at any time in the history of modern civilization.

Do me a favor, go to a BLM protest and tell everyone there that they need to "consider the context" of how minorities have it better now they they did 100 years ago.

Doesn’t the size and scale and police reaction prove the point that society is more humane than 60 years ago? There is less at stake in these civil rights protests than the last round.

No one has said today is perfect. People are saying today is better.

I sometimes think so too. Strong economy. Lots of good, secure jobs, especially if you go to university. Housing is affordable. You can look forward to a secure pension. Pretty chill pace of life. Less crowded. Interesting things going on culturally.

On the other hand, unless you're a weirdo, you're getting married at 20-24 and then immediately having 2-4 kids over the next few years. So that interim between reaching adulthood and being locked into a mortgage and raising kids is about 2-5 years, instead of the 10-20 years it is today.

Your house is much smaller (kitchens, in particular, are tiny compared with today), and more people live in it. Children often share a bedroom. You probably don't have a dishwasher. Drip coffee makers and microwaves haven't been invented yet.

If you're a woman, you either have a job or kids - extremely difficult to do both since kids are sent home for lunch every day and employers make zero allowances for school schedules or parenting needs.

You work to the clock. If your company starts at 7:30 am (which many white-collar businesses in Calgary did up until the 90s because we needed to be in sync with Toronto bankers hours), that means your ass has to be sitting at your desk at 7:30 every morning. Or you're fired. You probably get two weeks vacation a year. Taking more than a handful of sick days a year marks you out as a malingerer and shirker.

You're not flying anywhere on a vacation unless you're rich. And even then it's something you might do once or twice in your life, and the most exotic destination is Hawaii or Acapulco. If live across the country from family, you might only see them again a couple times before they die. If you have family overseas, you may never see them again.

You better like meat and potatoes, because the Calgary restaurant scene consists of a bunch of burger joints, a few pizza places, and handful of Chinese restaurants. For bars you have a dozen or so grungy hotel lounges and taverns, most of which women aren't allowed to enter. Everything is closed on Sundays.

Speaking of bars, the roads on a Friday or Saturday night are thick with dudes driving hammered. And you're regarded as a freak if you wear a seat-belt.

Most people, including teenagers and high school students, smoke. Everywhere.

Life, especially for children and youths, is much more violent. It's not at all uncommon for boys to come home from school with bloody noses or broken teeth. Fights and bullying are rampant and largely shrugged off as part of life.

Pot is hard to find and you run a real risk of criminal prosecution if you buy or posses it. Porn consist of magazines, and reel-to-reel movies purchased from shady sources for stags. And of course video games, movie rentals, the internet, streaming TV, forums like this don't exist. If you're chilling at home you're reading a book, playing cards, watching Gunsmoke, or maybe assembling a model plane.

That's all just if you're a white dude. Things were obviously worse in many ways for women, racial minorities, non heteros, etc.

And of course this is all assuming we're talking about being a typical Canadian in the 60s. If we're talking global, you'd have to be deranged to chose the life of a typical person on the planet in the 60s vs today.

In the 60s, police and national guard sprayed live rounds in riots and shot up entire neighbourhoods. Hundreds were killed. The recent unrest in the U.S. is a fraction of the scope of the race riots of the 60s.

what!?! surely that cant be true, there was no Black Lives Matter or Antifa then, that would imply the riots are just the result of an oppressed underclass being pushed too far and nothing to do with the radical left, that's crazy talk man!!!

At some point, we as a collective society need to find a way to deal with this. It’s been years of reporting on the genocide of the Uighur population in China. These are modern day, state ran internment camps which were well documented back in 2017 and we have continued to turn a collective blind eye? Now with irrefutable rape, torture and starvation, we’ll have the rinse and repeat of condemnation and loud words and absolutely no action.

This is the organized genocide of millions of people.

There are interviews with Uighur's that are frankly terrifying. Its beyond brutal, its nazi level stuff. And sorry for the Godwin, but it is.

China has a completely reprehensible government with the one thing that the Nazi's didn't have. Unprecedented world wide financial influence and a top rate intelligence service that seems to infiltrated, influence is foreign countries, compromise and steal.

While there might not be a grandiose shooting war in the South China seas, make no mistake China's already fighting a war.

I had no idea where to post this, I think this thread works, but I'm really curious what 20 months of "Don't say the N-word" training looks like.

If it took him 20 months to do this then he might be clinically insane or have the intellect even lower than most of the 'Pizza' his company sells.

That being said...'Non N-Word' training sounds like a great scam to get into...

So his response was that he meant it took 20 months to have media correctly explain the context around his use of the N-word. There's no way of drawing that conclusion from what he actually said, but that's what he's saying now.

During a conference call around his racial insensitivity (he was complaining about the NFL protests around kneeling costing him business) he defended himself by saying that “Colonel Sanders called blacks n-----s, but he never faced any public backlash." His argument is that he doesn't use the word, just was quoting old Sanders...

Which of course shows exactly why the company thought he needed the racial sensitivity training. Forgetting about him 'quoting' Sanders for a second, he still used the term "blacks" and then used some white guy who died 40 years ago as an excuse to be a racist, but the second biggest problem (the first being him using the word) is that Sanders doesn't have a documented history of using the N-word...

The sad part about that interview is the interviewer "you see these headlines come out and smearing your good name" is acting like reporting on him using the N-word is 'smearing his good name' rather then him being criticized for being a racist.

You know maybe Papa John should look into whether he has diabetes, cause apparently it can cause you to just say the N-word
