You could always go overkill and buy a Sequoia like we did. I know the hippies won't like it, but my wife does. Tonnes of room. Can haul anything.
A better option could be the X-trail. My cousin has one of those, and there's tonnes of room for a bench for the kids, and then room in the back for the dog and strollers and whatever else. I think it hauls pretty well too.
We own the Ford Flex and love it. We have two kids and a dog and no problem. THE AWD rocks and so far no problems. You can get 5 people and a dog or 6 people into the car.

I forgot about the Subies. The 2.5 turbo Forester is awesome. Get up and go like you wouldn't believe, and handles unbelievably well (and I'm making that comparison after jumping out of a sports car). You can get one fully loaded without dvd/nav for about $40k all in.
