Ah, ok, yes, I can appreciate that. Missed that part somehow.

My only concern is leaving things they way they are, is there a potential for the room to smell a bit musty?

If you have no history of water penetration into the house then some simple landscaping may be enough. I'd also monitor that area during heavy rains. If melting snow is causing the hole to fill with water, I'd imagine a good rainstorm would too.

Outside of a fire, nothing else can screw with a house as badly as water.
