Default Covid Jersey Vote - Best #1 Flames History

Here's a good mindless daily poll that by number may get us through the quarantine.

Ideally it creates a discussion and kills some time.

Today ... #1

(I'm going to try and include every relevant player for every number, not every player)

Oh and decided on Calgary history only ... if that's a problem say it now and I'll adjust.

I don't know why I always think Lemelin wore #1 instead of #31...

Anyway, Riggin should be winning this by a mile.

Have always loved the generational differences in historic things like this. Can't blame anyone under the age of 40 for going more current, and Roman Turek would be my vote if the first ten years of Flames history in Calgary didn't happen.

But I'm old ...

So I remember Pat Riggin as the Flame's first #1 goaltender making a huge difference in the team's first playoff run (and the franchise's first series victory after going 0 for in Atlanta).

He had a 6-4 record and a .904 save percentage in an era where nobody was .900+. Was a machine in upsetting the Flyers.

He did wear #1 briefly in Atlanta, the year before the team moved to Calgary.

I was so excited when they traded for Don Edwards ... really didn't work out though.

Hockey was changing and the west (Edmonton) were feasting on goaltenders that came out to challenge shooters by passing around them.

It's weird that I don't really remember Edwards that much. For some reason, my goalie line goes Riggin -> Reggie -> Vernie -> Freddie -> Kipper with a bunch of filler in between. Well... filler and others that I purposely choose not to remember, like Kidd.

Edwards has also had a terrible post nhl life. His parents were murdered and he suffers from ptsd and has basically withdrawn from the world

I voted for Hiller because I think he had the highest single-season peak out of all these guys.

Turek, Hiller and Elliott all had great stretches but never for more than a full season. I remember McBackup finally notching his first win and getting a shaving cream pie during his postgame interview. Riggin amd Edwards were before my time.

HM: to Marc “Shakey” D’Amour. One of my earliest Flames memories was watching a game in 1985/86 against Detroit. This was back when the Red Wings were awful. D’Amour was in net and the Flames could only manage a 3-3 tie as a result. /Coolstorybro

EDIT: here is McElhinney’s interview. Love the line at the end “My left eye is absolutely burning right now...”

Jeez, just googled to see where Don Edwards is and found an article about his parents getting killed:

I voted for Turek but it’s pretty close. I did really love when he gave himself a pay cut. I thought it showed great character.

Riggin backstopped the Flames to the Stanley Cup semifinals in their first year in Calgary. This gets my vote.

Thanks for bringing this back, Bingo. Funny, I was thinking about these best player by number threads a few days ago. Great idea!

I assume we can skip #2? I mean, given that nobody's worn it since Commodore, I'd reckon he's the obvious choice.
