2016-17 Flames' CHL Prospects, General Discussion Thread
The major junior season is underway for the year, and the Flames have sent a bunch of players back to their junior squads after Training Camp, so it's time for another prospects discussion thread.
The Flames have a lot of players in the CHL this season, and some who are currently on the bubble who could see a return to junior.
Let's look at them by Draft Class (players in grey can play either in the AHL/ECHL or CHL this season / players in red must be sent back to the CHL if they don't make the NHL / players in black have either already been returned the Junior, or should be shortly)...
2014 Draft- Mason McDonald (G) | TBA/Charlottetown (QMJHL) -- McDonald could be returned to Charlottetown as an overage player this season, but I doubt that will happen. He's more likely to be sent to the ECHL to get plenty of playing time within the Flames' organization.
All other players from the 2014 Draft played full professional seasons last year.
2015 Draft- Riley Bruce (D) | North Bay Battalion (OHL) -- Bruce has already been returned to the OHL. Last week, he was named North Bay's Captain for this season: http://battalionhockey.com/article/b...-troops-opener
- Nick Schneider (G) | Medicine Hat Tigers (WHL) -- Although not drafted, Schneider was acquired in the summer of 2015 as a UFA signing. Schneider saw action in Stockton after the end of the Tigers season last year, amassing a 4-5 record in 9 games with the Heat.
- Andrew Mangiapane (LW) | TBA/Barrie Colts (OHL) -- Mangiapane had an outstanding season last year with the Barrie Colts. Because he is already 20 years-old, he can play pro this season, or he could be returned to Barrie as an overage player. He seems to have accomplished all he can at the OHL level and is ready for the challenge of going pro. I expect him to play this season in Stockton.
- Rasmus Andersson (D) | TBA/Barrie Colts (OHL) -- Like his bread eating Colt teammate, Andersson also has a 1996 birth year and can either play pro or be returned to the OHL. Also, like Mangiapane, I expect Andersson to spend the season with the Heat. The Flames have concerns about his off-ice commitment to healthy living and it's easier to keep an eye on him if he's playing in the organization.
Pavel Karnaukhov is the last former-CHLer from the 2015 Draft, but he chose to return to Europe this season and is playing for CSKA Moscow in the KHL.
2016 Draft- Matthew Tkachuk (LW) | TBA/London Knights (OHL) -- Chosen 6th overall in this summer's Draft, Tkachuk has been lining up on the left side of Sam Bennett and Troy Brouwer during the Flames' training camp and preseason games. This points towards Tkachuk being given a prime opportunity to make the Flames to start the season. He should get at least his nine game look before the Flames have to decide whether or not to burn the first year of his ELC. If he is returned to Junior, he should be a leader on the London Knights, as they attempt to repeat as Memorial Cup Champions.
- Tyler Parsons (G) | London Knights (OHL) -- The Memorial Cup winning goalie is expected to see some action in the Flames' preseason game against Vancouver tonight. I expect to see him sent back to London tomorrow morning. He could certainly be the Flames' goalie for the future, but this year, he'll be back in the OHL trying to defend his Championship.
- Dillon Dube (C) | Kelowna Rockets (WHL) -- A point-per-game player last season for the Rockets, Dube was released from Flames' camp the other day. The Cochrane native is the youngest player in the Flames' system and will likely require another two seasons in the WHL before he's ready to turn pro.
- Eetu Tuulola (RW) | Everett Silvertips (WHL) -- A solid young prospect who is making the transition to North America this season. He had 3 points in 4 preseason games with the Silvertips before joining the Flames for Training Camp. Because he was drafted out of Finland, he is not subject to the NHL-CHL agreement and could potentially go to the AHL next season, but this year, he'll learn the North American game in Everett.
- Matthew Phillips (C) | Victoria Royals (WHL) -- A small, speedy, talented centre. The Calgary native was the WHL's Rookie of the Year last season.
- Stepan Falkovsky (D) | TBA/Ottawa (OHL) -- Falkovsky is a massive Belarusian who played last season with the Ottawa 67s. He turns 20 before the end of the year, which means he's considered an OHL overage player. Because he's also a European import, he would take up both an overage and import spot on a team's roster. For that reason, it may be difficult for him to find a roster spot in the CHL this season. Because of his age, he could play pro this year. I wouldn't be surprised to see him assigned to the ECHL.
Things should start getting a little more clear over the next week or so as the AHL and NHL seasons get closer.

Friday night action...
- Bruce played his first game as the captain in North Bay. He was a -2 and took 9 minutes in penalties, including a fight. The Battalion lost 6-3.
- Schneider stopped 23 of the 24 shots he faced in a 5-1 Tigers win over Saskatoon.
- Phillips scored the lone goal in a 1-0 Victoria win over Kamloops. He was also named the game's first star. It also looks like he was wearing an "A" for the Royals on Friday.
- Tuulola made his WHL regular season debut in Everett's 3-1 win over Portland. He had no points and was a -1 on the night.
Kelowna had a game on Friday, but Dube didn't play.

Saturday night...
- Schneider stopped 27 of 28 shots in Medicine Hat's 3-1 win over Swift Current. He was also named the third star in the game.
- Phillips was kept off the score sheet as Victoria dropped a 5-2 decision to Kamloops.
Kelowna lost 3-0 to Prince George. Like Friday night, Dube didn't play for the Rockets.
Everett and North Bay had Saturday night off, and will both play on Sunday.

Tuulola may have just scored his first WHL goal. Nice move, his speed looks way better than advertised now that he's playing amongst his peer group.

Over the weekend, Schneider turned aside 50 of the 52 shots he faced, and today was named WHL Goaltender of the Week: http://whl.ca/article/tigers-nick-sc...er-of-the-week

Tuulola and Dube are both injured week to week according to the WHL site. Tuulola is a suspected shoulder injury. Dube is lower body according to the whl site so not sure what happened to him.

A few notes on Riley Bruce
He is on the 1st PK unit, no PP time. To be expected as he is a stay at home defensive defenceman. Skating will be his biggest hurdle to overcome. His shot needs some work too. I know hes a 7th round pick so you have to keep that in mind when watching him. But it's nice to see him with the C on his jersey. Obviously means hes a great locker room guy and a leader. If everything works out for him he could be a #6 or #7. Probably bottom of the depth chart as far as defenceman on the Flames go so he's got his work cut out for him.

Updates... - Big night Friday for Matthew Phillips: 3 goals and 2 assists in Victoria's 6-1 win over Edmonton. He now has 6 goals and 4 assists in 8 games played this season.
- Tyler Parsons also had a big night in the OHL. He stopped all 18 shots he faced in a 4-0 win over Windsor. He has a 2-0-1 record in 3 games played.
- Schneider also had a strong night between the pipes, stopping 22 of 24 shots in Medicine Hat's 7-2 win over the Hitmen.
- Bruce has been held off the score sheet in all of the 6 games he has played this season. North Bay has started with a 3-4 record (3-3 in the games Bruce has played).
- Dube still hasn't played a game this season for Kelowna.
- Tuulola is still injured and hasn't played since October 2.
Also, at this point, it looks like all the other junior-eligible players will be playing pro hockey this season. McDonald and Falkovsky are both in Adirondack. On Friday, McDonald got his first professional start and walked away with a 4-3 shootout win. Falkovsky also played in the game. He had no points, but was a +1 on the night.
Mangiapane and Andersson are both still in Stockton, who start their season tomorrow night.

FWIW Ottawa 67s has dropped a European player and don't have the greatest OA crop. Could potentially be an open spot.

This begs the question, which league is better for player development, the ECHL or the OHL?

The OHL. The ECHL is not much of a development league. Coaches and staff are much better in the OHL.

I used to work with his older brother a few years back, super pumped to see he is doing so well in spite of his size.

2 goal night for Tuulola tonight. I believe it was his second game back from his early season injury.
Anybody heard anything on Dube? Still hasn't played yet.

Nick Schneider with 38 saves on 40 shots for a big win for Med Hat against Red Deer tonight
He's now 7-2-1 with 2.63 GAA and a .915 save %
Good start to the year for him
Helps that he has a better team in front of him this season
