It should become more like 17th ave SE! Porn stores, pawn shops, liquor stores and cash advance places.

As he said, he wanted something more than shops that have to do with various forms of lube.

Can't people bypass 16th by taking Stoney North? Or are you talking historically?

That's the thing- right now people have 3 options if they aren't stopping in Calgary:

- 16th ave through the city. Direct but slow speeds and traffic lights.
- Stoney Trail NE/NW. Faster speeds but adds 20 km to the trip
- Hwy 901/22X/22 bypass. Adds only 12 km over 16th ave and is faster speeds; but a lot of 2 lane highway.

If the SW leg is done through the reserve, then they can work on twinning Hwy 901. That will give a proper bypass that doesn't add any distance to the trip. If nothing else, even with Hwy 901 as it is, that is a pretty easy stretch of 2 lane road; lots of room to pass and very few hills to deal with.

I keep driving by the SE road part near 22X and cranston area. I have no idea how the project is going to look like when its done; all it is now is a bunch of barriers and support beams for numerous overpasses. Anyone have an image of the finalized plans for the SE leg?

I'm heading through Calgary this weekend, hitting town around noon. Would Stoney Trail be the fastest way or should I just suck it up and take 16th? I am driving ~13 hours that day so the quicker the better.

Does anyone know a time line for when the eastern portion, 17 Ave south, will be open?

I'd say at noonish you're just as well going right through on 16th. The ring road's good if you're headed north from one of the east or west directions. If you're going straight through, I think 16th is still the best bet.

Plus you can stop for lunch at Peter's.

If you're coming from SK and going straight through on #1, Stoney will be way faster. Sure, 16th is ok east of Deerfoot, but west of it turns into traffic light central.

Plus, you don't have to stop at Peter's for lunch.

The signs posted along the construction zone and the website both say fall of 2013, but I am not sure how they are doing schedule wise. Seems realistic.

Anyone know what the monster set of pilings is for on Deerfoot south of 22X?

They are on the Auburn Bay side and there's no way they are for an offramp or anything like that - just too far away from the new interchange and right beside the houses. They even have the soil covered in poly as well.

If you read the link posted higher up in this thread you can see that they will be used for a set of weaving off/on ramps.

Actually that's exactly what they are for. You will be able to go from Deerfoot to Stoney and vice versa without having to slow down from 100. They are actually building all the interchanges "correctly"- like what you see in major US cities. This also answers the old question of "why are there lights on 130th instead of an interchage? Why is only Deerfoot free flowing?" Do do a full interchange takes a LOT of space and a lot of overpasses and underpasses.

Yup you are right that is going to be a new weave type underpass for coming out of Auburn Bay onto Deerfoot north bound. Kinda similar to the one coming from Ikea onto Deerfoot south bound.

What you know of as the Deerfoot/ 22X interchange right now is going to look massively different this time next year. There will be a total of 7 bridges at that intersection alone.

As far as schedule goes it sounds like they are still shooting for a fall 2013 opening but they are going to need another good winter that they can get some work done to get them back on track.
They still have to start driving piles to work on the over pass at sundance/ 22X

Thanks guys, I'm heading from Moose Jaw to Van and back. Actually was just thinking since I'm stopping in Osoyoos for the night on the way out that I might take the crowsnest. Haven't done that in years. I'd miss Calgary but would probably lose a bit of time in the mountains. On the way back it will be #1 all the way and I'll probably take 16th for a break.

Haven't ate at Peter's in ages, but I didn't think it was worth a detour. Would rather detour to stop at Blacktoot Motosports and ogle some mechanical eye candy.

If you take the ring-road stop at Mucho-Burrito in Beacon hill (right off the ring road)... Num num.

And then plan for a gastrointestinal emergency stop in Brooks.

Actually, Mucho Burrito is very good for fast Mexican food.
