You could ask 100 people who is "top musical talent" and get 100 different answers.
SNL decided long ago to normally book artists that will attract the most eyeballs.
Carrey is wrong as Biden. They have the look down, but Carrey is too manic to play Sleepy Joe. Hammond would do a better and darker Trump too.
Update is sharp now, when they decide to go dark.
Weekend Update has always been my favorite part of the show and I even enjoyed the standalone version they previously tried.
I agree that top musical talent is very subjective. I'm not sure what their approach is for booking the acts but something just doesn't seem right to me. One big issue I have is that the performances, even from great artists, seem overly terrible on SNL. Maybe it is the studio set up, maybe it is the production aspect of it.

It suffers the same issue as talk show studio performances. The studios are so small that they have to quiet everything down for it to sound good live in studio. And while the mixing and mic'ing are top notch, something is really lost to the at home viewer when drums, guitars backing tracks etc. are all quieter. It really takes away from band performances, especially.
They are probably blazing performances in studio though, where the crowd is like 10-30 feet away.

"Popular" music is trash now. It's basically three multinationals pushing whatever degenerate filth they feel like. The "biggest" song this summer was two obese black women rapping about how lubricated their vaginas get.
Jack White and David Byrne were hands down the best musical performances I've seen on SNL in probably two or three seasons. The rest have been mostly garbage.
Edit: Actually now that I'm thinking about it, Gary Clark Jr. was pretty awesome as well. He was on last season I believe.
There are still some actual artists out there among the people who are successful more due to corporate promotion ... but those now emerging are fewer and farther between... just fewer in numbers with how the music industry has been broken with digital streaming.

Woody had Joe Biden down. Not sure if they asked or not, but he nailed it last year.
Hammond is a great Trump too, but I guess they called him in 2016 and were like “your out, Baldwin is more famous”. There is a clip on You Tube on how they dumped him.
Carrey is way to manic as others said. I am expecting him to yell “Smooookin’” at some point.

"Multinationals" and "obese black women"? Are we talking about music?

This. Selina Gomez was the musical act and despite not being a fan the two songs she did were spectacular when I was in the audience. (Rhonda Rousey hosted)

It matters what size the women are?
