Default vandermeer trade

so, i know ist a bit of duplication, but after reading most of the thread in the main forum, there was only 1 comment about potential qc implications of picking up vandermeer. do any of you guys that pay more attention than i see anyone getting sent down? or will it be a matter of having an extra healthy scratch in calgary? or will they unload onto someone else? perhaps it is too early to tell because of other potential moves? just looking for opinions.

btw, being in illinois and seeing the few blackhawk games that they chose to broadcast, i didn't think vandermeer was too bad of a player. but i guess thats something better suited for the main thread.

The Flames are now carrying 8 healthy defensemen and (IIRC) 23 healthy bodies. They're just scratching an extra defenseman per game. None of the defensemen could get sent down without clearing waivers.

Excuse my lack of knowledge here: I thought they could only scratch two players at a time.....in which case, if they had two d man scratches they couldn't scratch a forward and would have to then send one down? I guess that would only add up to 22 players and according to you they carry 23 players. How come we usually have only carried 22 players?

Again, thanks for the rules update!!

NHL rules say you have to dress 2 goalies and 18 skaters (for a total of 20 guys). Teams like to have a couple healthy bodies around just in case, but due to cap reasons the Flames usually only carry an extra forward and an extra blue-liner. The NHL rules say that until roster limits are waived late(r) in the season, you can only carry 23 healthy players.

Yeah, Sutter has a history of carrying 8 defencemen as the team approaches the playoffs. In the 03/04 playoffs the Flames were scraping the bottom of the barrel for replacements with all their injuries to defencemen and it may have cost them the Stanley Cup.

Right now, the injury to Moss has opened up another roster spot and when he comes back, I could see them sending down him or Boyd temporarily, if they have to as they won't have to clear waivers.
at least these are my guesses.

Right now they're announcing Krahn as a scratch and usually rotate the other scratch. It's been Cunning, Sutter, and Burke of late, but after Peters went down in Milwaukee on Tuesday, he was a scratch on Wednesday. (Hopefully that means he'll be back tonght...we sure appear to need him!)

I'm guessing it's because they don't want to use an IR spot for Krahn, but it limits who can be scratched....

There are no roster limits in the AHL. We could have 30 players scratched every night. I don't think there are IR spots either.
