Although he will be a free agent at season’s end, McElhinney said he hopes to emerge from a stacked Calgary goaltending pack as Kiprusoff’s backup again next year.

“I think there is still a good opportunity in this organization for me,” he said. “There are a lot of good goalies coming up. That adds some pressure but at the same time, it motivates me.”

Out of all the goalie prospects, I think McE is still the frontrunner for the backup role next year.

The only other thing preventing it is if Joseph stays on or another goalie is brought in from another organisation.

Considering they didn't have any faith in him in the NHL and Sutter has stated he hasn't been as good as in previous years in the AHL, will he really be given the chance? At some you either fish or cut bait.
