Steinberg: Tkachuk eager to sign long-term
Quote:
Well, here’s what I know: Tkachuk is eager to sign long-term, thus cementing his spot as a leader going forward. As such, I think a fair contract offer gets the job done, even before the season starts.
|
Talks about signing Tkachuk and Hanifin being left as far as priorities go:

His family has and will have rediculous amounts of money going forward . Probably a little easier to leave some money on the table

If the Flames don't win a Cup with a C on Giordano's chest, I'm confident they will with one on Tkachuk's.
This kid is driven to succeed, and he wants to do it here. We're a lucky bunch to have that kind of talent, passion, drive and (surely) leadership wearing our team's jersey.
We're allowed to be pessimistic as Flames fans, as we've already had someone with those same traits dedicate himself to our team. But the roster Tkachuk is playing with is wildly different than what Iggy was afforded. Granted, they had a Kipper... but we're not worried about getting a center that can play at his level.
The league fawns over the what the Oilers have in McDavid, but I have a feeling that at the end of their careers these two will be talked about synonymously. Maybe McDavid's speed and hands will be a nod to the McDavid camp, but they are heated debates when they spark up. The north should fear a lost opportunity this time around. The odds would be pretty tilted towards the Flames if they were both sitting that game out.
It's exciting times!

With Tkachuks lineage and personality I just see him as one of those guys who wants to make a difference long term in an organization, and I think he and his family like the Flames. Just vibes I’m getting, but I’m expecting a sweet heart 8 year deal.

It would be smart for the flames to sign him long term this summer. With Marner needing a new deal next summer I would be worried about the leafs overpaying before the flames pay Tkachuk. I’d say they are currently in the same tier as players and it could be tough to negotiate if the leafs sign Marner to a long term contract for 7 mill or more. I’m sure the flames want Tkachuk at around 6

I'd be shocked if it's more than 6 years.
But I hope very much I am shocked.
He'll want the security of a long term deal but the leverage to negotiate an 8 year deal down the road while he's still in his prime.
But there is nothing wrong with a 6 year deal.

Would love a long-term deal with Tkachuk now, simply because I think his body and style of play have a limited shelf life at his current pace. Let's get the most out of him while we can, so skip the bridge contract.

HAHAHA! Keith Tkachuk never once stepped over a penny in negotiations. There is a pretty good chance Matty learned that "pay me what i'm worth" attitude. Who is taking a salary discount because there daddy was successful? I've never heard of that before.
